550 Electrical Problem - Need Help

I’ll start by saying I am new to the hobby and am not very well practiced in any mechanical maintenance. This damage was caused by me hooking up the battery backwards (not my brightest moment). Following my debacle I switched the wires and the ski did start. I am hoping the only real damage is to the insulation of the wires. That said I have a few questions

1) Would it be reasonable to simply wrap the exposed wires with electrical tape or similar non conductive material? (Any suggestions)

2) What are these wires connected to? I may be able to answer this myself this weekend when I have more time to open the Ebox and maybe take some other things apart to get a better view.

3) What gauge wire should I use to replace these?

4) Is there anything else that I should check once I open the Ebox?

Thanks

Go on eBay and buy a new one, that's what I did and saved me tons of time. The goal is to make it reliable as possible. Just slapping a band aid on it will help it for a little while, but then it will crap out in a year or two.

Thanks for the advice! Seems like they go for about 150 bucks. Is there any special considerations that I need to take into account being that this ski has a 650 in it. For example will all the wires be the right length? Or should this just be a drop in and go deal.

That's a good question. I'm not sure because I never converted a ski. You would need to ask someone who has done a build like that. I got my ebox in mint condition for 85$ plus shipping. Well worth it!

Well I sacrificed the electronics of my first jet ski, hopefully that will do it.

In all seriousness I did take it out last weekend and it ran great for about 30 minutes I started and stopped several times during that period. And I guess you call it lucky but right when I got back to the dock I went to start it one last time and it wouldn't fire up, it was cranking, albeit not quite as hard as it should have been. From what I've already read online it would appear to be a bad stator.

And to any other newbies who might be interested, the answers to my questions as I have found are
1) yes but the problem is not fixed. Taping bad wires might keep them from being exposed but it's not going to fix anything.
2) they are the stator wires and are connected to a few other things in the Ebox.
3) not sure but if I buy a new stator it will come with those wires.

Does anyone know of a jet ski service that will be able to fix the issue in southwest Missouri? Replacing a stator sounds like something that takes more experience than I have.

Of course not! Im 14 and i had to replace the stator, easy as pie.

1. Take off the flywheel cover
2. Take off flywheel with a puller
3. Unbolt the two bolts on the stator plate
4. Go to the ebox and unclip the wire connections
5. Feed the wires out of the waterproof tubing
6. Bolt on new stator and connect wires to the right connection

And bam your done. This is for a 550 engine. If you have something else some steps may be a little different.
Also, SILICONE EVERYTHING!! This is so no moisture gets in and destroys it and you have to do this all again.
