550sx turf

How did you guys go about turfing a sx assuming I already tore off the plastic and trashed it? The fiberglass under the plastic has ridges and gaps like crazy. Think I need to smooth it out before I try and turf it?

if the ridges are less than 1/6" i would just take a sander to it and knock them down as much as possible and then turf over. If there are cracks or fiberglass missing that would leave gaps of like 1/4" i would fill it with filler, sand that, and then turf. I'm still new at fiberglass and turf though.

Sounds good I will give it a try. Just mix it up thick enough where it shouldn't run or drip? Any other advice before I dive head first into this? Won't have the ski back for a few weeks having the crank seal replaced

So buy the epoxy/hardener set, buy the filler, and then buy one of their measuring pumps (the bottom of the page at the second link i sent you) so you mix the epoxy and hardener correctly. Mix the epoxy and hardener then start adding filler. The filler is a powder with the consistency of flour. Keep adding filler until the consistency of the mix is like peanut butter. Then you can spread it wherever you need. It goes on really nice. You might want one of their little squeegees too but really you can use any straight edge you have laying around. Try your best to get it as close to the finished product as possible because sanding it is not fun. This stuff gets pretty damn hard. If you dont have an electric sander borrow one or buy one. You definitely dont want to hand sand it. Before you turf sand everything with 80 grit.

Im told epoxy is way better than polyester but frankly i dont know. Im sure that for what you are trying to do it will probably work. I've only worked with fillers and fiberglass for one week so I'm definitely no expert. the guys at us composites are pretty friendly so you can probably give them a call and ask.

Im getting ready to turf my sx too
im filling those low ridges with kitty hair
its kinda like a fiberglass bondo
sand first with some course paper so it sticks better

So I took the easy way out and just turfed over everything. The ridges on the side I cut in a piece of turf and glued it down so that was flat. Then installed some lifters on the sides with 25mm padding just because I could and wanted to see if I could nose stab it. Also made a kick plate with the padding because it makes getting on with your knees for beginners so much easier. The low ridges in the bottom of the tray I pieces in little strip so the bottom piece would lay flat. I then had to cut the bottom piece into the ridges of the side. Not familiar with fiberglass in and did this job with free turf we had laying around so only cost me a can of dab. Filling in the ridges would have been a more liget way to do it but think it turned out well.
