300/440/550 550sx wont run in water help.

Ok so here is the problem I'm having, bought the ski and it ran fine for a while then it started bogging down really bad and i noticed some fuel coming back out of the carb so it was suggested that i replace the reeds, so i put new reeds in and now when i take it out it will start and run fine on the trailer but i cant even get it to start in the water at all it kinda sputters like its going to but just won't run, someone told me it may be my crank seals, any other suggestions?? thanks a bunch.

i dont know really what help i can give you but i had a 550 and it did the exact same thing! litttle fuel would come out of the carb thru the butterflies and out of water was fine until you droped it in i dont know why but i guess its common if yours is doin it to

i gave my 550 to my girl and im gonna clean the carb out and see what good that will do. i have heard though that its best not to keep the old carb so maybe changing out would be good to do

Thanks for the reply hemi, I already cleaned the carb out, anyone else have any idea what could be causing this? Seems really strange that it runs fine out of water but wont run with a load on it, any help is very appreciated. Thanks

I've heard of guys installing reeds upside down. I guess they only flex one way. Things run but not well. That could be one issue.

Have you adjusted your carb for the new reeds? There is a great link in the 550 forum (maybe 3 weeks old) about tuning a BN44. I've used it to tune mine. Maybe the old reeds required a different adjustment.

It's not a bn carb if it's a reed motor. Is the fuel leak gone? Are there any mods done to the ski? Your carb settings might be off.

It is the reed motor, I put the 2 stage boyesen power reeds in it, no mods on the ski right now no fuel coming out of the carb that I can tell but I haven't actually been able to ride it in a while, haven't been able to tune the carb because I cant even get it to start on the water. Im thinking I may have some kind of internal issue because im getting fuel and spark as it starts just fine out of water just sits and cranks in the water, it will kinda fire up but dies shortly after, cant keep it goin.

get someone to hold the pump out of the water so you can get it fired up, then drop it in and take off and see if you can keep it going.

Not sure what the high and low speed adjusters are set at but would they keep it from starting at all?? Already tried holding the pump out of water, it fires up but as soon as you drop it in it just dies again, i cleaned the carb out good but thinking i should just go ahead and put a rebuild kit in it and see if that helps all the parts in the carb looked good diaphram etc. but who knows could be something i didn't notice, deffinately ready to get this thing back in the water been down since May this year, i appreciate all the help you guys have offered so far keep the ideas comin cuz im out of them lol.

Rebuild the carb and set the screws to the settings i posted. A poorly tuned carb can definitely keep a ski from running in water.

Ok, got the carb kit ordered and a new insulator gasket for the carb to sit on, was wondering about the above post about my reeds being on upside down, i don't recall there being any indicators of which way they were supposed to go on besides the first stage reed with the holes on bottom and the second stage with the fingers on top but since I'm in it that far i will pull them back out and see if they need to be flipped or something, anything else i need to do while I'm in there? thanks again for all the information.

Ok so I discovered something, im missing a tiny piece in my carb, I believe its called a collar, its a little black piece of plastic that sits down in the circuit chamber by the check valve, unfortunately I am unable to locate one anywhere, if anyone has an extra please let me know, I'll gladly pay for it, the part number on it is 1118-964-7000. Thanks

Are you talking about a little black rubber piece the size of a bead, which holds the check valve in place? Because those may come with your rebuild kit, depending on which one you ordered.

No, i'm actually not sure what its for but I ended up calling around some diff dealers and tracked one down, so hopefully I can put it in when I do the rebuild, tune the carb and be back in the water. I'll post after this weekend when I get the parts and some time and let you guys know how it goes.
