Some say the spacer keeps the reeds in better shape as they are not as close to the turbulent crank air turbulence. I only run mine so my stock dual 38 air box clears my girdled head.
The spacer adds to crankcase volume which I have been told can detract from bottom end response. I would suggest avoiding the spacer also as it increases the chance of air leaks. I would only use the spacer if it was a functional need as suggested above (clearance) .
Ditch it! As mentioned above, they increase crankcase volume and lower low end power. Not good for freestyle. They were designed for racing primarily for strokers to reduce reed flutter at high rpms.
