If the eBox is grounded through the stator, could I have a bad stator? This isn't the one that was in the ski previously.

Yes. They are compatible. Going by memory, I believe the rev limit on the 6m6 CDI is just a little lower than the 61x. Stator, VR, coil, start relay etc is all the same.
Yes, but as John said above, you will need to change the cdi or you will be hitting the lower rev limit of the 650.
Thanks! I'm told the cdi is one with a higher limit so it sounds promising
