Super Jet 650 sx vs. SN SJ

So I recently learned to ride on my buddies 650sx, and fell in love with the sport. However, a friend of mine let me take out his 93 SJ, and I was impressed. Besides the obvious things I noticed, I wanna know what makes the SJ such a better ski, and what it would take to make the kawi compare. (Basically, I need to hear some motivation to save up the extra cash to get a superjet, rather than going out and buying a 650sx thats half the price.) Newb question, flame suit is on. :notworthy:

You can put a bigger engine in the Yamaha and make more thrust. Its difficult to get the same effect from any Kawasaki. But mainly because more people are Yamaha fan boys.

Yes in my reality I am out riding while you are working on your Superjet, you are right it is a lot different.
read a little more on this site (or others) and you'll see terry's enthusiasm for the sx is not typical. To back my statement up just compare prices between the two skis.

Kawi is cheaper. Yamaha is better in every other way.

Yamaha is completely interchangeable in pumps, motors, etc b/t all SJ. The hoods and such are naturally not interchangeable, but all the powerplant/driveline stuff is. There are more parts avail and typically perform better (imo).

Kawi has an abundance of stock parts avail for cheap, and are cheap to buy. You can't just put a 750 pump in them, and changing out motors etc is often hard due to things not fitting very well.

I've been throught the Kawi line up, and finally learned a lesson. I now own a SJ. I'm keeping my Kawi but it's not my primary anymore.

Go Yamaha. 650sx or w/e aside, go Yamaha.

650 sx is a great ski to start on they are very reliable, But hands down the sn 650 is a way better ski. Like vumad said there are so many parts that are interchangeble for the sn u can always update later..

Parts aside, what about actually riding them? To me, the SJ handled much better, and doesn't porpose like the kawi does. The yamaha was also faster it seemed like. My biggest question is can a kawi be modded to handle more like the yamhaha does?

No. It handles like that because of the design of the ski. Changing the steering wont ever make the 650sx feel like the SJ. The feel of the SJ has to do with the design of the hull amoung other things.

Yes and no, depends on how you go about changing the steering, if you do nothing but get rid of the heavy ass handlepole and bolt on an aluminum pole it makes a world of difference on the SX, if you do what I did and go fixed steer, chopped hull, flat deck its a whole different ski and handles completely different than a stock 650SX, most peeps that have ridden my ski can attest to that fact. The bottom line, I don't have a whole lot of money in my ski to get it where its at, mostly because it weighs in at around 255 RTR, if you think you can take a 650 powered SN and mod it to the level where you have a decent performing ski and be able to say the same I wish you good luck.

all you have to do to make an sx fun to ride is make your own fixed steer hood, chop the hull and flat deck it?

WFO, you are overstating quite a few things there. The OP did not say he wanted to build a whole new ski (which is what you have done). It does not sound like he has your extensive fabrication skills (both on skis and posts). :pokey:

Vumad is spot-on with his first post...

Refer to first sentence of the quoted post

No not really regardless of which of those skis you choose you are still going to be stuck with a huge heavy ass handlepole that needs to be replaced if you ever want to do any kind of serious riding, and that folks is the bottom line.

I started with a pristine 90 SJ 650 that I bought for $500, I now have around $1600 total into it with a 61x62t 710 180psi dual 44 carb, prop, new turf, bars, and ride plate. Ive never ridden a 650sx, but the people that I know who have ridden one say they are completely gutless and handle like crap. You can get a good SJ 650 for a cheap price and just mod it as your skill level increases.
