Technically speaking:
Both have the same stroke.
The 650 has a 77mm bore for 633cc. The 701 has an 81mm bore for 701cc.
The porting in the 650 is more conservative than in the 701. The exhaust ports are much bigger in the 701.
The intake on the 650 is smaller.

While the 650 is decent and can be made better with aftermarket parts, it's just pissing money away since you can get a running 701 for pretty cheap these days.
It's fine to start out on a 650. You can always sell the motor and get a 701. In the end, you'll have spent only a couple hundred bucks to make that switch.

Is boring a 650 worth it? They use the same e-box components, ....

Don't mean to jack, but this is something I've wondered for a long time. How big can you go b4 cases won't work? And even if you did go big, it sounds like porting would be a must.
Maybe a 701 would be cheaper.....

Just trying to justify the existance of yama 650's. Without success.

Everything is smaller in the 650 cylinder. They can be bored and ported up to (performance wise) where the 701 starts out. 650 cases can work with any cylinder with minor modifications although nobody will use them making them valueless as well.

I've done it before - ported and bored to 718cc, and on 62T cases with dual 38's. Lol, quite the bastard motor. It ran well, though.

So, you would spend in machine work, pistons & rings, porting, etc... enough to make it well worth while to simply start out with a 701 motor.
This I can understand.
Thanx all.

Not trying to tread jack here but I am in the same situation I just bought a 650 superjet but have a 94 waveblaster with a built motor in it and I plan to swap the engines and sell the waveblaster with the 650 in it. My questions are first are the bedplates the same for my 93 superjet and my waveblaster? Also it looks as though the ebox will unbolt and just swap right in or would it make more sense to just swap my electronics inside the box as my waveblaster has the riva cdi. Will the couplers line right up as well or is there extra work needed there. Basically it looks like both the engine and ebox will just unbolt and bolt right back in is this correct or what is needed to make this happen.

Everything will swap right over engine/electrical wise. The only difference is the longer leads for the start stop switch on the blaster ebox.

Well tonight after work I decided to pull out my stock 61x motor from another Waveblaster I have and use it to replace my 650 engine as we talked about and I gotta say it was so easy and everything went very smooth I also switched over my 61x cdi to match so it should be a very nice package until I can convince myself to throw the built motor in. The entire swap starting with both the waveblaster and superjet as ready to ride skis and removing both engines and reinstalling WB engine into SJ mounted conected and running in my drive way only took 1 hour and 55 minutes. There really are no tricks needed just dig in it does not get much easier than this swap.
Hopefully the results are make me as happy as I am about how smooth the swap went.
