650/X-2 650SX exhaust leak under flange. Fixable? (Video)

Hey guys,

its an 89 650sx and looks like previous owner put on a 1986 x-2 exhaust setup. Had a tiny pin leak on head pipe, swapped that out, then noticed a drip and found it coming from the seam under the exhaust flange.

I KNOW people upgrade/use the coupler style exhaust, but this is what im working with, and I just spent money last week on the new head pipe, so not looking to switch right now.

question is, is this weldable, and if so, should I now keep it because itll be stronger, or should I just buy another quality used one?

I would feel confident in jb weld holding fairly well.
If it doesn't hold than I would tack it a couple times (if you have the ability to weld at home)

hey ed,
tried tacking it first with propane, no good, turned the pipe into a mess, cleaned and machined it all up, then went out and bought oxy/acetlyne and tried again, made even more of a mess, so i finally recleaned and machined again and tried bluemagic thermosteel. looks horrible, but its on the underside. waiting for it to dry now.

spent over $100 on torch kits, etc, and then just wound up going with the $5.99 thermosteel fix.

if it works, ill call it a day.. if not, ill clean it all up once again, and i guess go and pay the $100 the guy wants to put like 3 small tack welds..

afterwards, i looked up wtf i was doing wrong... i was getting the pipe red hot, and the ns3 (nickel silver for stainless steel brazing) just wouldnt melt. the blue outer stuff would melt, just not the actual braze... i THOUGHT the blue stuff was the flux, and that melts first, then the metal.

i have a feeling now that i was told wrong, and that i still needed to flux the area first to make the braze stick melt.

any truth to that?

yea what the heck? i just went back and googled it, and it says "these FLUX COATED NS3 brazing rods....." so if that was the flux, i dont know HOW the F an oxy acetylene torch wasnt able to do the job.. that pipe was glowing red for a while

yea i know what you meant. i called two local welders, i even offered to drive to a 3rd that is about 45 min away, they all wanted $100. just for a few quick tack welds..
so i though i could just NS3 braze the little pin hole myself. still cost me $65 for the oxy acetylene setup, but figured it would be good in the future.

I was hesitant on paying the $100 to get it welded bc i saw a few used pipes on ebay for 30-$70...but then i was hesitant about getting one of those bc this flange style has been know to crack, so a converstion to the 87 and above x2 or sx exhaust and head pipe are in the near future
