I went through 2 650SX before I got smart and bought my first square. The SJ ull last 10 times longer for freestyle!
Not to mention a beefier better engine to build with better low end from the begining.
If you have to pay a few hundred more for a square it will be worth it in the long run.

I have owned quite a few boats in the past 2 550's a 650sx 2 750sx's and 3 750sxi's they were all great boats but I bought a square about 4 years ago and now I have a 90 square 95 fx-1 and 98 round still have my old race 750sx but it has sat un ridden for the last 2 years only my opinion but for fun and low maint I'd buy a yamaha any day and the way it's going I'll never go back to kawasaki's

SX's are good because they are cheap. If it gets you on the water go for it. Otherwise, you get what you pay for. SN are usually more expensive than SX.

I wish one of these threads would contain meaningful information about hull designs and etc that make it better at free style. The only thing I've ever read is about engines and you can put a bigger engine in anything.

That's not very useful so don't waste your time searching.

I have gathered is that the Yamaha has a flatter bottom so it steers more with the back, and the Kawis steer more from the front. That means, the SJ slides and the Kawi carves.

The yamahas are also said to be more reliable.

The engine discussion is negligable outside of reliability. Sure the SJ has a bigger engine than a SX (Only if you buy a 1994 or newer, so if you went with a same year Kawi you'd probably have a 750 and that means the Kawi still has a bigger engine). You can put a bigger engine in anything. Comparing apples to apples, Kawis have larger engines stock (generally, remember to compare years, an 89 SJ has the same size engine as an 89 SX).

Yamaha is the preferred brand so there are more after market parts availible to you, especially used, which is a huge plus.

Saying "I like the SJ better because it's better" is not really that helpful.

To directly answer your question to the best of my limited ability.

The SJ has a flatter bottom which gives you better handling for freestyle. There are more aftermarket freestyle options avail to you. More parts are avil used for the budget concious. The yamaha is less lekely to break down so you have less maintance, if you go with a SJ with a 701 in it you will have a bigger engine, but that requires a larger budget, so if you want an older SN, you will have the same size engine as the SX. The difference would be that the SJ has more mods avail so you will have a better chance of buying a used pipe or something to get a bit more out of the same size engine.

IMHO, the 650 Yamaha engine has the 650 Kawi engine beat, hands down.
Same with 701 vs 750.

Hulls: I hated riding the 650SX hull. I did not care for the handling, though I cannot put my finger on why.
Same with the SXI Pro hull.
SXR was better.

My knowledge is limited so I may be wrong. I hope my comments inspired some more knowledgeable people to elaborate on the subject. Quite frankly, I have been wondering myself on the engineering aspects of the hulls and etc that make it better, but all I ever read is "It is just better". No engineer built 5000000 skis until the found the one that felt the best. Somewhere someone knows why the SJ is what it is, and is unchanged for so long.

It doesn't really matter to me WHY it is the way it is.

I Have rode 550s, 650s, 750s (SXI Pro), SXR, SJ, Octane.

Of all those, I like the SJ by far the best. That's all the reason I need.

Oh, and fwiw....the 650SX is at the very bottom of that list.

Here you go:
SJ
Octane
SXR
550
750
650

It's not life altering if I don't know, lets call it a curiosity. Every improvement you see is because someone wondered why something is the way it is and then wondered how they could make it better.

I like to wonder. Sometimes I get good ideas.

Haven't ridden the 300, that's why it's not on my list.
