650/X-2 650sx Widened tray build, turf, and paint... and???

So, I've been looking for a RN superjet for the past 6 months or so (since i got a 650sx) heh.. Seems no one wants to let one go for under $3,500 (too expensive for me)..

So i'll deal with what i got..
First thing i noticed is how narrow the tray seems when you're riding.. especially with the "V" handlebars (they're gone, got some 0* bars.. huge difference for me!).. Still feel so confined in the tiny tray.. So....... Got some time off work and with the extra time and help from my boy this is what we decided to start today.





FYI: watch out for the exhaust tube on the left side of tray.. :smashfreakB: might have to JB weld it if ya don't lol

Gonna tinker with it tomorrow and hopefully we get to the glassing stage.

Feel free to give me suggestions and advice.. I'm noob at this!

Here's the bars.. forgot to add them.. guess it's cause nothin' special but if you're new to standups GET NEW BARS!


Also, finger throttle makes a nice addition..

I started to add foam to the side as a base for the glass.. if it looks ghetto (it's because it is) hah! but i should be able to cut and sand for the prep.. guess you can't really go too wrong with it.

About ready for the glass, tried my best to foam in all the voids.. Shaped the walls. Because of the pipe on the left, the left rail is going to be wider then the right. However, i'm goofy so i wanted the right side to have room.


Question: should i try to cut and shape the inside rails i cut out and glass them in, or can i put multiple layers of glass straight over the foam? And the resin won't eat the foam will it?

You should be able to glass right on the foam. I have been. Hit it with some compressed air to clean it out.

Why not glass over the pole bracket area then run an rn pole? I've seen a couple like that and seems to change body position for the better. Surf riding and freestyle

how are the straight bars? I never really felt comfortable riding the 650 compared to the superjet, maybe just the setup?

do the straight bars just mount onto the existing plate in place of the v shaped ones?

The stock bars are narrower and actually come back further so my arms and elbows felt very close together. After replacing them with 0* bars i immediately felt more in control of the ski. they are wider so i feel i can shift the weight from side to side much easier and it brings you up on the ski a bit for center of gravity IMO.

I can't give you a good comparison with a superjet because i haven't had a chance to ride one yet..

and yes the Blowsion bars i bought replace the stock ones using the original steering plate.

thank you! I finished the first layer and then did the 2nd on the left rail... i had to book it to make it to my softball game so i didn't get as far as i had hoped today.. I think the wider tray will be much more cozy!

Yes, i'm just running foot straps surf stance since i don't plan on getting too crazy in the surf! hah I have a hard time riding with both feet back anyways for some reason.

Never really thought about that.. i'll look into it and maybe see if it will benefit me much.. and see the price of a RN pole

Just chop the pole you have 4" and it will feel even better, I chopped mine and a friends and it makes it so much easier to throw around. We did four layers of 9oz cloth around the cut and they've both held up fine.

That sounds cool.. you got any pics?

I like the rn pole. It puts the bars on the top of the pole and has less of a downward sweep at the last bend of the pole.

Final layer on.. just have sanding to do on the tray and i should be done back there for now.

I found these clamps help keep the final cloth in place and keep it smooth.

You can probably find a rn pole with no pad no mount and no steering for 200 maybe 150.

So a buddy told me he was bringing his ski out yesterday to the beach.. had about an hours notice, so i rushed home, zapped it with a grinder to get the sharp edges down, put a foot strap in the front, grip taped the back, hooked a few things up and took it out!

Rode very well.. I am pleased with the wider tray.. Found more of a natural stance and it felt much more comfortable.. Happier with the tray.. def. recommend it if you're on a tight budget with a 650sx..

Turf and pad is on order.
