Super Jet 701 cutting out on me, then not starting

I have a 61x 701 that ran great last year and so far so good this year until the last week or two. I was riding on Sunday and it started to sound funny and became sluggish so i turned around and headed to the dock only to die in the middle of the lake seconds later. I kept squeezing the throttle but the ski would not pick back up. I have a brand new b pipe and blowsion head this year and again seems to be running ok. The pipe is set to factory recommended settings and so is the carb.

This time once i got to shore, I had water in the engine bay and a cloud of smoke inside. Ive been having issues with my couplers on the chamber of the pipe so that could be whats causing the funny noise and smoke. Water could have made it sluggish?? Im not sure. I have a bilge and it was running when I was stopped trying to start it.

When I was trying to start it, it would make a noise similar to grinding or a strong buzzing. Is that CDI issue, stator or starter/bendix? Any idea? thanks for the help!

Grinding type sounds while rolling over the engine...or trying to...most likely is the bendix. I replaced one on a friend's ski two seasons ago for the same reason. Grinding while running the starter, couldn't get the starter to catch the flywheel, replaced the bendix and all fixed up.

With enough water in the engine area the ski will run sluggish.
I would pull the flywheel cover off and check everything for that noise. See if the stator is lose and/or if the bendix is sticking.

I did have a cloud of smoke come out when I pulled the hood. For some reason my bpipe doesn't seem to fit as well in my new hull (bob gen 2). My goal tomorrow is to pull the pipe and the flywheel cover to see what that looks like. I'm thinking it's the bendix but didn't know for sure. Just seeing if someone had similar experiences.

It's when I'm trying to start the motor. The motor doesn't engage but makes the noise

Don't torque the clamps down on the bpipe coupler so tight. Just snug them, I've have this problem if I put it on to tight. Also you can run a longer coupler if needed. And I'm sure its the bendix making the sound

Definitely the bendix. Got a new one and fired right up. As for the ski shutting down on me, my hose from the pipe to waterbox split in the middle. I'm assuming the exhaust leaking in the engine bay cause it to die on me

Thanks for the help!!!!

probably where the water came from too.

as for coupler band tension, snug them down. make sure the rubber is spotless and very clean as is the outside of the pipe or it will continue to come off. I used to have my coupler come off every so often, once i cleaned it it took me 10 minutes to line it up right it was so sticky.
