701 help

On my last ride of last season I was coming home from the inlet. I was riding along and I think I blew a head gasket. Before I knew it the engine was overheating. As soon as I realized what was happening I shut it down and swam it to shore. When I got to shore many of the hoses had melted. When I got it back to the dock it would still kick over. I just took the engine out of the blaster and I can turn the engine by hand using the coupler.

Here is my questions...what do you think I should do? Rebuild the stock engine and if so, to what extent or purchase a rebuilt etc. I would love to buy the new 701 advertised on here but it is just not in the budget at this time. I do need to keep the cost down to a minimum. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Check the compression... if it's fine, and the engine isn't making any weird noises when turning it over or running, I'd run it till it ******** the bed :D

That's just me though.

Well have you taken the engine apart to look at everything? Possible something got clogged in a waterline to cause the overheating?

I'd tear down the engine and check out the crank and topend. If its just a topend rebuild your lookin at:

$100 for bore and hone (both holes)
$272 for a topend rebuild from SBT

And since your spliting the cases you should also install new crank seals... about $50

If you need a crank SBT has 'em for $275 or new hotrods are $400 i believe.

Do a compression check before you tear it apart. There may be no need.

So if I get a compression of around 150 +/- 5 lbs and it does not make any strange noises I'm good?

After it first happen I was pissed so all I did was spay some wd-40 in the spark plug holes. Good idea or not?

Well it could raise your compression number slightly for a few cranks but that's about it. Around 140-150 and I wouldn't worry if it's on a stock head.

If i were you i would just pull the head off- see what the cyls look like. Comp. test is good but u cant tell if the pistons are scorched and what not. Head gasket is cheap are cheap. That way you really know

I just took it to a shop, so I can't really get pics now. Sorry. What I have are pistons that are rusted and pitted and walls that are worn. The side of the piston wore against the wall. I got a price of 5 to 6 bills to bore it out and replace with the next larger piston, gasket kit, reeds etc.

I see that I can get an sbt rebuild for $745. What do you guys think?

SBT is opening a whole other can of worms.

you can get a complete engine from them CHEAPER than you can build one yourself.

BUT, sometimes the quality is subpar.

you can for sure build a better engine yourself ( for more $$$)

SBT is the for sure the CHEAPEST way.

sounds like you are paying at least a couple of hundred for labor $$

which really isnt THAT bad.

BUT make sure they dont use WSM pistons when they rebuild it, they will liekly try since they are the cheapest ones.

and find out why it broke in the first place, get a written warranty.

and hope the crank isnt hashed as well.

I would just do it yourself its easy - and since your in NJ theres a ton of dudes that would probably help out. Figure 100 for a bore and 200ish for pistons. plus a few bucks for gaskets. Doing a top end is extremely simple if your mechanical

I am pretty mechanical but I have never bored cyls before. I would prefer to pay someone who does it on a regular basis to be safe. After that, I think your right, I can do the rest myself.

and since the cylinder would be over at Chuckys you could have him give it a little port attention.
