701cc How to Set Timing?

Can anyone point me/those of us looking to a thread that has help on how to properly set the timing for a ~1994 Superjet 701cc converted? I'm willing to go out and buy the tools necessary.

I bought one of those aftermarket (I know...) stators and now I don't have a reference for timing an the cast marker-bar. The first position I tried was way to late (was bogging/backfiring), the second setting I made (based off the original stator) was a bit early (I'm only getting 4000/7000rpm). Would really like a way to get it set right once and for all and move on, pulling the engine over and over is getting old.

In the pic, the top line is the original (bogging real bad), the bottom is the position it's in now, the middle line is what I copied (as best I could) from the geometry of the stock stator I pulled off it.

I know there has to be a science to this, I just want to get it right. Thanks in advance!

That stator might not even be any good too, Been there!

Be cheaper to buy a good used one from jetmanic and be done with it..

For timing I use a positive piston stop and or a special dial indicator thru spark plug hole, timing pointer, timing tape and a timing light, cut stock flywheel cover, degree wheel..

Transferiering the mark over should have worked…

I’ve had bad cdi’s also cause loss of RPM and cut out before fully reving out..

You’re going in the retarded direction on your timing, throw that thing out or return it and buy from JM before the motor blows up.

I didn't read anything here but line up the marks for standard timing. For every mm turned it either advances or retards about 1 degree. Turning the stator plate against rotation, advances timing just like turning the distributor on a car. Turn it 5mm advanced and it'll give you a hair more snap off the bottom.
 
Test that stator. Bet it tests bad even being new....take harbors advice and buy a tested and warrantied one from Jetmaniac. I've never gotten a bad stator/anything from him in 10 years of purchasing history.
