701x starting issues

Hi finished my build on a fx1 stock 61x motor, new piston rings, fresh bored cylinder everything really. Any way I go to start it the first time, and my starter motor dies out although the ski seemed to run for a little bit everything seemed normal.

So I go and put in a new starter from sbt and it just turns the engine the motor was even attempting to start. I got gas being pulled through the lines, have compression, and from what I can see I have spark. So I keep trying to turn this motor over and eventually the starter would hesitate there would be a loud snapping noise, and boom starter done, won't turn over now. I'm wondering if maybe I just blew a fuse somewhere or I really did burn out my new 130$ starter with in 5 minutes. Also somethings up with my engine, I'm think a intermidden spark problem, or I screwed up the timing when I installed the stator and flywheel if that is possible.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

How long did you hold the starter? I wouldn't turn it over more than 5 seconds at a time. Pause about 20-30 seconds to let the starter cool down. You probably burned up the starter. Next time try to pour a little fuel down the carb.

Are you positive all starter wire connections were tight? If they were loose it would cause it to burn up. When you installed the stator did you line the arrow on the stator plate up to the arrow on the case?

Just reviving this thread here, I figured out the problem after I pull the flywheel. It seems the fly wheel magnets made contact with the stator, there are some scratches in the magnets of the fly wheel, and some damage to the stator, as well as some metal shards in the bottom of the case. Just wondering how this happened was there a spacer I was supposed to put between them. Also how f'ed am I with the stator there's a little chunk of copper wire missing can I fix it.

yeah I figured out what is was, I didn't have the key that sits in the little divet on the crank that the flywheel holds on to. It was sitting right in my parts tray. I'm guessing that was the problem, everything else looks find, bendix is find, and the stator didn't suffer to much damage. I should have this up and running soon.

So you put the flywheel on with out the woodruff key? I'm failing to see how the stator got damaged due to a missing key that was not stuck to the inside of the flywheel....you sure you have a matched set for stator/flywheel?

I'm positive they're both straight out of the motor that is 100% untouched since the factory besides by me. Not having the key would screw up the timing that's why it wouldn't start, as for the damage it's possible the flywheel and stator never made contact and it could be a small bolt or pin got grinded up up in there causing damage. If this helps the metal shards that were under the cover were magnetic. So Im thinking the magnets on the flywheel picked something up with out me noticing
