750sx starting issue

Just put a motor in from a couch. When I hit the start button it has a grindingish noise. Release button or its running it is fine. I pulled the cover everything looks as it should, oiled the bendix up and still the same. Any ideas on what I'm missing to figure this out

Make sure your ground wires soild... Had 4 skis give me weird problems cuz ground from starter to battery .... Does the starter need to have shims is the starter teeth all there ?? Good luck
