800 Flywheels/Ignition

Someone mentioned to me recently that 2004 and newer 800s don't require the charging circuit to run. Can anyone confirm that, and does it apply to kawi triples as well?
Reason I ask is I can take that 750/800 flywheel, remove the magnets and lighten the inside of the flywheel and I think get it down to about 1.5 pounds; less than half of what it weighs stock. Only downside is no charging, like a total loss system.

Yes they can operate that way. Back in the day it was the poor mans total loss, but only on the 04+ skis. Just knock out the magnets on the flywheel and take out the stator, but you have to keep 2 of the 5 wires. one is a ground, cant remember the other.

04 and up SXR has a DC powered CDI so no stator is needed to run just the pick up coil (blue & green wires)
But you must have a ground from the electrical box to the motor. That wire currently is the black wire in the harness coming from the front cover. "Need a ground"
