300/440/550 87 550 back firing through carb

I have a stock 87 550 that I put a sbn 44 on. I took it out today for the first time and it ran great for about 1/2 hour. Than I let off the gas hit it again and it started acting like it had a fouled plug. Well it wasnt a plug problem. Now it will only start at full throttle with the primer and it back fires through the carb and will not stay running. The carb is also clean. Any ideas?

Check the woodruff key.

Pulled the flywheel and found it was rubbing on the black electrical tape that was wrapped around the wires coming from the stator. I guess this could be grounding it out am I correct?

yeah, that is probably your problem, I replaced the coils on my 550 a couple months ago, there isnt really room for electrical tape in there. Get some heat shrink and re do it right. It's kind of a pain to get back in there, so you might want to check your coils to see if they are still good, or at least the one with the bad tape job.
