89 x2 750/sxr rebuild questions

Hey x2 family,
I have a stock 750 big pin in my 89 X2. I have a mariner pipe and a stock exhaust manifold with the water connection up sized. I have the stock water box drilled out and am running the stock fuel tank. It also have a 44sbn single on it with an aftermarket (modified), intake mani.

Here what I need to know:

I have the motor with a professional engine builder now and am getting sxr 800 pistons put it with a modified 800 head. There will also be a significant amount of porting done to this motor by the builder as well. What is the ideal setup for exhaust, and intake? NOTE: I would like to keep my stock fuel tank.....

Any advice would be appreciated.

-See ya on the water!

IMO a single SBN44 is small on a 750, and for sure 800.

You should go duals. At minimum OE SXR carbs, or 44's

As far as a pipe, I would look for a Factory Pipe Limited Pipe for a Blaster.

Hey zig,
I'm trying to learn as I go here so don't mind my ignorance....... Is there a certain year of pipe I need for the blaster setup? I'm digging around and trying to figure it out to get a visual on how it'd go together.... Thanks.

If you are going to run a fpp in a x2, you are going to need a hodgepodge of parts.

The kawi 750 head pipe does not fit in the hull with a matching manifold. You either have to clearance the hull or run a 650 manifold. I run a westcoast manifold with the lord mount ground off and the manifold is bored to match the head pipe. The westcoast manifold is thick and has a blocked jacket so it's ideal for boring.

As for the chamber, people have used everything. I have a sj limited chamber and it fits well with some heat on the gas tank. I also had a 750 limited chamber at one point but it was harder to get the fuel tank to clear.

Another problem with these chambers is that you changed the head pipe angle. You need to cut and weld the chamber of run a longer coupler. Longer couplers are acceptable but are highly prone to failure when you start drying out the pipe. Any configuration is a headache of give and take, not all fit with the stock tank.

I'm currently running a custom waterbox and it works acceptable. I got my best results with a stock rn sj waterbox out the right rear, but that's nots compatable with my current hull.

It's all a game of give and take. The 650 pipes and stock waterbox are easy but hold back the motor.the big pipes fit poorly and are loaded with headaches. Be prepared to spend some bucks and time trying to work out the kinks.

That's plenty of info for me to research. Thanks for the reality check and also the great experience advice. If was easy everybody would have a tricked out X2 I guess.......

It is easy to trick out a x2, you just have to decide what is important to you.

For example, you can make a badass x2 that simply bolts together. Get a sj motor with matching pipe and waterbox, a single 44 or 46 carb, run the exhaust out the right rear, use the Rhaas kits to bolt it all right in. Only challenging part is ebox location and making some exhaust parts to go over the the gas tank and battery. Tuning specs are readily available.

The cost of these components are very high to invest and a x2 and the top speed will be less than a kawi motor.

It seems x2 owners like to stay on a low component budget because the value of the end result, so they pay the price in tuning. I'm very invested in a kawi setup, but now that the Rhaas kits are available, if the money wasn't an issue, that's the route I would go.

My 750 is 1.5mm over so almost SXR size. I run SXR 40mm carbs with a diverter [TS style] manifold and modified stock exhaust. Its ok but the exhaust is really holding it back. I just ported the manifold and a PJS headpipe as well as installing the pjs chamber so we'll see if it helps at all. Also getting a SXR head cut and machined for 180ish psi over the winter. Ideally either a factory pipe or coffmans would be best but they are more money then I'm willing to put into my backup ski.

yeah, I did that right out of the gate. Also modified the stock steering to maximize turning. Running a stock instake grate for now, but I do have a 10/16 hooker for a prop. hoping 2016 is going to be a better year on the water.

Let me know how that 10/16 works. It was too much on a small pin. Shoukd work good with that displacement and porting.
