91 square nose motor replacement

Last year I finished repairing the tray on my ski along along with other handling mods. This year I blew up the stock 650. A needle bearing let go and caused all kinds of carnage. So now I need to find a suitable replacement.

I found a complete 650 with electronics, carb exhaust etc. for $350 and it has 160lbs on each cylinder.

The other motor I found is a 701 on ebay for $799 for just the motor no accessories. Neither has been ran for a while.

My goal is to get back on the water and have fun. Obviously I'd like as much power as possible, but I dont how much better the 701 would be with all my 650 accessories.

What would you do?

I’d probably be able to hook you up with a guy who has a nice 62t long block w or wo stock exhaust in good shape for in the 600 range.
What “accessories” are you rocking?
I’d spend the extra personally and plug a 701 in your craft. Way more potential, way more fun. Now of course it’ll be a bit more expensive and you should change props but that’s my .02.
There’s a lot more to life than a 650 my friend

The 650 I found for 350 has electronics, flywheel, starter, carb and exhaust. All stock, which I already have on my blown up motor.

Can I run my stock 650 stuff on a 701 long block

The real question is why would you want to lol
You could run the 650 flyhweel If I recall it’s a little lighter than the 62t wheel.
Buy a 701 complete at a good price and sell your 650 stuff and never look back. You can find 62t’s complete for 6-700 bucks

Ok, so let's say I find a 701. Sounds like the flywheel and stator will work, but the rev limiter needs to be adjusted. Will the carb work with some different jetting, how about the exhaust?

This ski sits at the river house and gets used a couple times a year for riding with friends and jumping boat wakes.

Carb will work with rejetting ,intake and reeds are different, rev limit in CDI is lower, exhaust really needs to be off a 701. one of the resonos I recommend finding a WR lll is pretty much everything off of it will bolt on and work, even the engine mounts, pump and midshaft are of course different, WRlll 'SNdon't really run any different with a 650 or 701 installed, if they 650 is rebuildable you could install it in the WRlll and sell it. VXR's also make really good swap boats and have the same midshaft and pump as a Superjet.

62T will have more power but laid out for mid to top end , the exhaust will have to be modified to work with your exhaust unless you are planning to go aftermarket, stock exhaust ( 5 ton pipe ) cant be used. Stator + CDI also different either one u use they should be matched ,as well as the Coupler ( 3 Finger oem 650 VS 5 Finger 62T engine ) depending on what ski this engine came out of.

I personally would save myself the money, you are riding rec, single carburetor 650 or 701 should suffice....

Your budget is probably too limited for this hobby. The only way a used engine is a good deal is if it has no corrosion inside. These can be difficult to find now.

Nice gate keeping dude, way to keep it positive!

You can for sure find a clean motor for less than 1k. Not as cheap as they used to be but prices will come back down somewhat. And you will never notice the difference between 61x and 62t in both their stock forms to validate the outrageous price difference for “muh bottom end”. If you decide you want to change it up later you can make that 62t cyl run pretty awesome with some decking and porting.

Get what you can afford and enjoy yourself dude, summer is running out!

There are plenty of good used engines out there , I did a SN swap for a customer last year out of a VXR PRO which had a 701 engine, he was very happy with the power increase.

Thanks for all the replies. I found what seems like a good deal locally.

My plan is to order a gasket kit and tear it down so I can check bearings, cylinders, etc... do you guys recommend lubing the needle bearings with anything specific prior to putting it back together.
