91' Superjet hull coating

Howdy,

I'm looking to get my hull back to looking like new again. Question is, what is the factory coating? It's so thin that it looks like paint to me. Was thinking I would block sand it and put a couple coats of a 2k single stage urethane. Thoughts? Really looking for durability here and or possibly sticking some vinyl below the rub line (assume it has to be free of imperfections if water is to keep from peeling them off). Thank you

Looks like a crappy paint job to me.

Not sure how well vinyl will stick below the water line. Seems like if you got a small nick in the vinyl & it would start to peel up quickly.

I used the Paint Shop Pro products (Duplicolor) available at Oreilly's Auto to paint an old JS550 a year or so ago. Couple coats of color, several more coats of clear. It turned out great & was pretty tough. I'll be doing the same to the bottom of my current 550SX sometime over the fall.

Right?? I thought the same. I ask because I bought it from the original owner (now 68 years old) and he said the hull is as original as everything else which is untouched. Thanks for the link, I will be sure to check it out

If you want hard core durability go for that Pettit isle and grab some ezpoxy. The deck paint is hard as nails and durable as hell. Brush or spray. As always prep well and give the new paint some tooth to hold onto. (I have not tried the new ezpoxy additive)

Thanks for the post.

What product do you have experience with for underwater application?

I know my 2014 SJ is painted for sure based on the massive peeling I have right now. Other years may be different and the bottom hull may be gel I am not sure.

Getting a good gelcoat finish is a bit of work. It can be done with a few layers and a lot of fine sanding and a good polish. Whereas the Pettit is a great coating and flows (smooths out) nicely and is great for our application above and below the waterline. <- Assuming that this is what you meant by underwater application. Since we don't dock our skis leaving them in the water 24x7.

I am a HOK (House of Kolor) fanboy for topside art. But for durability pettit ezpoxy is a hard coating to beat.
