Welcome! Where in CA do you ride? Looks like the ski has a stock engine and bpipe exhaust. (one of the best exhausts you can get for these skis)

Do yourself a huge favor and get rid of that k&n.

Get a blowsion or pro-k flame arrestor. The k&n suck.if they get wet and just look bad.

The old oval K&Ns had a fiber element that constricts then it gets water on it. They make watercraft flame arrestors without the fiber. I guess saying that they suck would also work but at least you know why.

I'd recommend putting a oem arrestor on it with 1 of the 3 screens. Itll keep water out of the engine when you roll over. Being new at riding, you'll definitely get water in the engine bay and with a k&n or any other open filter like thst will let all the water in which could leave you stranded in the water with a ski that won't start. Square noses are bad about water ingestion from the hood vents.

If you remove the screens it won’t work as a flame arrestor.

I remove 2 and leave 1 in. They 100% work great for keeping water out of the engine.
