94 Square Nose Handling for Racing

image.jpg Bottom of my ride plate, its a extended protec that I cut grooves, just like a groovy but longer, I also think the worx 201 is a better option than your jet dynamics intake aswell

just wondering, Love my SN,
but when I got the races, it is all SXRs and a couple Hydro
That is cool, I put sponsons on my SN and it rails a lot better
But they are surf jet Louis sponsons (RIP)

One thing I noticed about the SXRs... When I watch them go down the front or back stretches, they don't bounce around much.. They plow through the water. I'm guessing it's because they're so heavy.

Someone mentioned putting a sheet of lead under the gas tank on my square nose. I'm wondering if anyone has ever done thing themselves? I'm going to have to figure out where to get the lead, melt it onto a cookie sheet and then try and insert it under the gas tank. Is that the best way of getting this done?

Eventually I'll get the tubbies, new ride plate, shim the intake grate, new/wider handlebars, so until I can afford to do all of that I'm trying to get the low hanging fruit so to speak.

it has happened. world finals expert ski (superstock i think) 2008(maybe 2007, cant remember), Kenny Reeves on a 92 squarenose spanked Klipper on his hydro

2007 Masters ski, Reeves beat Tony Beck (Hyd).
2007 Klipper was Pro Ski world champion.

In 2008 Klipper beat Reeves in Masters ski.

I will be trying the lead I already have under the tank at some point. The lead sheets were sourced from old xray machines if I remember correctly. You shouldn't have to melt it to fit its only about 5/16" thick.

I might have enough to spare, I will check the total weight of what I have.

I've got 18lbs, you would probably need every bit of that. I will try to get more. BTW a triple cyl swap would be something else to consider in the long run. You would not believe how much easier it is to control the boat with the extra weight. A stock 1100 or 1200 will put you around 58-60mph. I'm seeing some builds where the battery fit in the stock location with an fx1 tank and shortened midshaft. So for the cost of a big bore maybe less, you have superior handling and stock reliability and 70mph potential.

Cool, thanks for the info. Right now I'm going to stick with 701 so I can race my vintage class. Just need to work on getting the tubbies, ride plate, and and weight up front. I'm trying to sell a set of dual 44s and a single 46 on the parts forums to cover the costs of this stuff so if you happen to know of anyone that would need it please let me know. $450 shipped for the dual carbs and $150 shipped for the 46.

Oh btw, if you could get more of that leaflet me know. It may be so heavy that it may not be worth shipping. I was thinking of trying to make my own from scrap lead from a local scrap yard.

Yeah I'm not sure what 20lbs shipping to ca would cost. Lead sheet is out there, other racers in the region will have some or know where to get it. That's cool that you have a vintage class there, some regions don't have enough interest to run them.

Yeah, for example, I'm trying to sell these dual carbs. The box is just under 10 lbs. $29 to ship it from Cali out to Florida UPS ground. If I figure out a process for getting a sheet of this lead I'll be sure to let you know.

The class is fun, they race 550s, 650s, and 701/750s together and give the 550s a head start of a pre-determined amount of time, then the 650s go, then us. By the time people are coming to the finish line, everyone is battling it out for the win.

heres what we did in the 90s w lead before tubbies
went and got old wheel wieghts from tire store melted them down and poered into a tin can
bored a hole for the can in the stock foam in front of the fuel tank
packed the can in the foam and that special race taped it closed
i still perfer my sn over my 08 and my sxr
i run the dd jet dynamics plate
also i have some hull ext and some beach house rear spon i might part with

Good to hear your SN rides as good as the SXRs do. How hard was it to melt the lead? I was trying to figure out where to put the lead in the hull but it sounds like you want it as far up into the nose as possible to get the best effect with the least amount of weight.

Who holds those races? DJSA? That sounds like a fun race. I'd like to enter one next year if it's not too far from me.
I'll be building a square nose this winter. I have all of the parts lying around so I figured I'd try to make it a decent stock class boat. I already race ltd ski on my 08 superjet and I'd like to race stock next year on the square nose. I just have to decide what I'd like to as far as handling goes.
