96 760 waveraider won't go over 5mph

I'm working on a 1996 waveraider for a friend. He said ti was running like crap and wouldn't go. I went through the carbs (they were full of water) and cleaned them, etc, and now it runs perfectly. I took it to the lake, it'll move when idling and just off idle, but as soon as you give it gas it loses all hookup.

I took it back out, and the clearance between the impeller and pump looks perfect. The one thing I noticed was the pump is well corroded. The leading edges of the veins on the stator housing are pretty much corroded away to nothing. Could this be causing it? Also, how does the impeller hook to the driveshaft on these? Is it standard SXR or SJ style?

yes just like any yamaha, with threads. how is your midshaft?? any noise coming from that thing when you give it gas?? THe motor revs up but does not go, correct?

correct. midshaft feels/sounds tight. it feels like it hooks up at idle and just off idle, but any higher than that and you can feel it let go

Pull the pump and prop and do a visual inspection...
