97 SJ Motor Mounts

no, you just remove the 4 mounts and push the motor forward a bit.
I once pulled the motor just to replace the dampner.

:bump:BK, I already explained that we did do what you are saying above when we lined it up the second time, so I’m not sure what you are trying to say, or why you would say to do it again, or if you are even saying to do it again (my lack of moto talk skill is likely the problem here).

To clarify…after lining it up the first time, prior to fully securing the mounts, we noticed a clamp was off of the fuel line to secure it. We secured it, and it must have ever so slightly moved the motor, causing us to have to loosen the mounts after the first firing and “eyeball” it again. That seems to be what you are describing above. Twas my Supr’s bday yesterday, plus he is preparing for a Cali trip, so I’m trying not to bother him, hence why I’m posing the question online. I simply wished to confirm that this is how the majority of you guys do this (align it without the tool), for I don’t wish to do an injustice to my ski.

I’m left to believe you two men are saying the exact same thing (in different ways), and to simply water test the ski at this point, since I believe it to be aligned as close as possible without the proper tool. Unless someone pipes up otherwise, that is what I guess I will do, and if something seems funny, I will find that proper tool. Please correct me if I’m wrong, for I would like to test it today otherwise (I am still concerned I will not be able to determine if things are correct even with Hazzards good description, and perhaps should have someone knowledgeable with me to determine it).

What BK was talking about was removing the rubber part (dampner) of the coupler and pushing the motor back so you can line the 2 metal parts of the coupler up perfectly with eachother. This is a good method. You do not need to pull the motor out for this, simply unbolt the motor mounts from the hull (not from the motor) and slide it forward.

Then bolt the motor mounts back in place, and shim between the mounts and the motor until the coupler parts are perfectly aligned. There was a pretty good thread about this not so long ago, I'll see if I can find it..

Actually, I would just remove the 4 bolts that bolt the cradle to the mounts. Both ways work, just twice as many bolts to remove, you would still have to losen the 4 bolts to shim the motor. Twice as much work but same result.

K, thanks guys! This is enough to let me know it should be looked at again just to be safe. I don't trust my skill level (lol) enough to follow what you say, yet it will most def help me learn for future (very much appreciated). I do know that we didn't put the shims back in that were there before, because it appeared to line up perfectly without them with the new mounts. I guessed the explanation was due to the fact the new mounts had no wear.

if you need a new dampner let me know. I believe I have a new one I can let go.
Line up that coupler with a 6" machinest scale.

Daddy always taught me that if I’m going to do something, to do it right or don’t do it at all, but you have to do it once at least to learn what is right or wrong, right! You sound like Daddy with that post! :smlove2: I'll let you know if I need a dampner once I learn what one is, so thanks!

LoL. Yea.

Suz. If you want I'll come back over with a machinist gauge and double check.

And its not a new coupler.. I thought her midshaft had a little bit of play in it, but after I got the motor out it was really smooth and tight. So no big deal.

And yea, I had a bunch of screw drivers I was using as feeler gagues since I didnt happen to have mine in the car with me when I randomly showed up at her house that day.... haha. Hell i didnt even have my basic socket kit. I was just there to pay a traffic ticket.

Ride it!

Can’t! You put your greasy fingerprints all over the outside…it needs to be washed now. Maybe you can do that when you come back over to see what is wrong with the fountain light.
