Typically they lowered and moved forward a bit. At least the R&D and UMI brackets did. It helps to lower the center of gravity and also changes the pivot point of turning (hard to describe). I installed the R&D bracket on my SJ back around 2002 or so when I was racing my old SJ. It was a huge difference in handling. Shortening the pole helps if your a tall rider, has longer arms or are looking at doing rolls and or flips. It is all just about the tuning of your cockpit.
