98 Superjet Build!

Now that I'm done with college I finally have time and money to put into my ski this winter! I've owned this ski for 5 years and it's pretty much stock, except for a skat-trak prop, R&D ride plate, pole spring and umi bars.

I live on lake Minnetonka where there can be some pretty big cruisers to chase, I also plan on making a trip to the ocean somewhere once a year, when i'm finished with my build. So i'm wanting a ski that can chase boats and do alright in the surf. I obviously have never flipped the ski, but I plan on learning barrel roles and flips when i'm done!

My first step in the build, is that i'm going to defoam the ski, since there was a crack in the tray and water got in it. I plan on replacing the foam with the pink sheet foam and adding drain plugs and footholds finally! I also plan on heavily reinforcing the tray, so it never cracks again.

For the motor i'm buying my friends motor, I got the chance to ride his ski with the motor and it's crazy fast! it has a factory B pipe, ADA girdled head with 37cc domes (which i'm fine with since I don't want to buy race gas.) The cylinders and cases are ported and it has 44mm carbs. Also comes with a moded CDI. Before I switch out the motor I plan on putting a layer of carbon down.

Some other things I plan on doing include adding automatic bilge, buying a lowered hood and nose piece, shorting the pole 3.5 inches, adding umi steering, along with a pro tec trim system and getting rid of the stock plastic intake grate!

I cut the tray out, not sure if i'm going to reuse the tray at all. There was a good amount of foam that was soaked with water, especially bellow the tray where it was cracked. Now i'm ready for the fun task of removing all the foam!

Here's a quick update, got the ski defoamed, still need to clean it up a bit. I think I might cut the back end -2.5 at an angle, since this is the only chance I will have at doing it with the tray removed. Is there anything I should know before cutting the back end, I know there's a few threads out there that I need to research.

I'm going to start reinforcing the ski, in the engine compartment i'm going to use carbon fiber and in the tray a mixture of fiberglass and carbon fiber. Where is the best place to buy carbon fiber and how much should I buy? I'm thinking 2 yards

How did your build go? I started cutting mine up the other day. I'm gonna refoam and do a wide tray. Just trying to do my homework on refoaming

Use polystyrene when you refoam. Then when it's all done, cut a hole in the top of the rails and pour 2-part foam in to the tray area, this will lock all you foam pieces together. Worked great on my 98 sj.
