Ive been told the hulls leak a bit. Great ski, not so great factory motor. Ive seen and heard some bad*** octane's with sxr motor swap

I rode my Octane in the surf for 2 1/2 years. Engine drank a ton of sea water and even with a crank bearing that completely fell apart, she still ran strong. Even stock, the engine was better than the yamahas I rode with. Fix then khein jets for a little improvement. Replace with Mikunis for a bigger improvement. Get a Watcon tuned CDI for more improvement. MSD TL was a huge gain. And of course, it just keeps going till your Polaris is now 950cc with power valves...
As for the hull, mine has been flipped and rolled in the surf. I really enjoyed it. Different grate and shortening the ride plate along with quick steer woke up the handling.
Unfortunately, Octane hull now sits outside as the drivetrain was transplanted to my Foot Rocket. But she'll go back together and we'll ride again in time.

I have one, I love it, there were a few of us that had them. I have tubbies on mine and it really improved the handling, they are wider than a superjet with a ton of room in the tray to move around. The hulls tend to leak at the bond lines. parts are becoming scarce. the 777 properly tuned will run very well. mine is freshwater. i cannot speak for surf but it has never really let me down, i dcut my stock plate and put a stubby mag cone on the pump and its fun to chase boats with. very very forgiving and is very stable compared to say a " 550" or hell even a superjet. they dont turn so well under speed as the motor is soo heavy and the heavy flywheel just blasts thru chop while trying to lean, alot of this is the rider too. for the right price, i promise you wont be dissapointed and have fun with a mag pump and a bpipe setup!

RMBC Freeride is a good guy to talk to. I rode his ski - loved it a ton. Its fun and unique but has lots of quirks about them

each brand of ski has its "quirks" and even similar models will have different quirks based on their life experience..for lack of a better term, i've heard and read different things about the hull/steering/leaking/motor and what it comes down to in the end is personal opinion..which is a rather broad spectrum at the best of times.

the parts issue is going to become an ever growing concern and i suspect lead to many mods/frankenski scenarios.

from my pov, i have an 04 its stock and l LOVE the thing..compared to my SN ..well...it doesn't compare the SN feels dead in the water so that's an apple vs orange thing.

i found as a freshwater lake boat is great, i don't flip or spin or barrel roll so for me, the extra room in the tray, the stability at speeds, the way it plows through lake chop are all a good thing..does it turn well...again this is so directly related to rider its a though one to debate.. not unlike super bike racing, each guy likes a different set up what one guy might find horrible the other might find fantastic..same for the ski..if you know where to put the weight and when to muscle her around..ya she'll turn just fine around bouys..are there skis that do it better..yup..are there skis that do it worse...yup.

the engine is strong and makes great power without having to spend a ton on mods..and if you do start modding it..as speedy said its even better.i'm pretty certain if the drive train sucked..he wouldn't have put it in his new foot rocket...right??

as for the leaking hull..maybe i got lucky but i drilled holes on each side of the hull to put drain plugs, left the ski with an incline towards rear on trailer for days on end, not a drop of moisture..maybe they changed things in th 04 model...or maybe i got lucky..who knows?

then there is the bonus of having a boat that's different from the masses as well..sometimes tha'ts fun.. not unlike ridding a Ducati instead of a suzuki..

is it "the best" at any one thing..nope, is it fun and do everything rather well..i think so, again this is from a lake boat perspective not a surf ski.

buy it, ride it, learn it, have fun with it...if you don't like it..sell it, im sure someone will gladly take it off your hands..

i own a very very bad ass 2002 octane that i bought from mike coe, world champion racer. it was his expert veterans super stock race boat. ported by chris bush and tuned by mark baxter. coe won the 2002 - 2003 world finals on this boat. i dont know how to ride it, since i never spent any time on it. i usually only take it out when somebody boasts that they have a fast boat. i always leave then in the toolies since very few standups or sitdowns are true 61 mph boats, like this one. just hanging on , on a couple straight away WFO passes, leaves me gasping for air. i love the adrenalin rush i get from this boat. it has tubbies in the front, which makes it chine walk and at 61mph, you are always a split second from being sideways, out of controll, doing summersaults or bouncing off the thing. it likes to hurt the rider and coe said he liked his practice boat, but hated this race boat. he said every time he rode it, he bled and i know what he means.
i also bought a 2004 octane that was basically stock, with a watcon CDI mod and some carb rejetting. i thought it would feel like a turd after riding the superstock, but i was very suprised that it was also a beast, with alot of power. maybe i was just comparing the bottom end performance between the two. ported motor lost bottom end? but both were the same. the 04 had tubbies and was also a a handful at top speed. i rode it one time in 2 years and sold it.
i know they are a huge hull, but not way heavy for their size. i'm sure with footholds and a large boat wake, rolls are possible. definatly not the best ski for freestyle, but i'd buy another one if i got a smokin deal on it. i paid $3500 for the 04 and it was cherry.

imho...stock vs stock..you'll blow past all kawi and SJ..again stock vs stock, my buddy has a kawi 800 and always gets mad when i blow past him. remember that the thing was purpose built to beat every other boat in stock race class...and a "stock" octane has a mag pump, twin carbs, AND B-pipe..which is well past every other skis version of "stock"

hence speedys comment of how it doesnt take much work to turn the thing into a monster compared to the "stock" starting point of other skis

the other very viable option if your a serious buyer with cash in hand is...

put it in the water and try it to make sure all is well before you close the deal..you'll know instantly if it has enough grunt to make ya happy.. but i'd say given all the previous owners saying basically the same thing..you've got the answer you asked and it now goes back to that viscious "personal opinion" thing..either way be sure to come back and tell us what you think of the girl ;-)

i'm pretty damn sure the octane stock was advertized as 100hp. thats 20 more than the sxr and a quite a bit lighter. i think the 96+ SJ was 70 or 75hp. kawi big pin 750 was 75hp. polaris has low compression. raising comp would probably up hp. mike coe told me the trick to making the octane turn and handle correctly, but i havent done it yet to find out. he said he learned the trick from his buddy victor sheldon who raced the stock octane class.

did you get yours running strong again after the problems at CFW this year? I heard yours hits hard as hell. ive only seen them and never hear to much negative feed back and cmon, it comes with close to $2,000 of "stock" am parts, cant beat that for a good run around boat

my octane eats spark plugs and it ate one at CFW. a new BR10ES and back to blazing. UMI poles were $823 before they folded up and $200 for the bearing steering. B-pipe and adapter plate $1100 and i'm pretty sure they have the whammer stinger mod which was extra. not sure what the solas mag 140mm pump costed, but it looks more like 3 grand with the carbon fiber polaris tau-ceti arrestors & adapters. not to mention the wamiltons special octane chin pad.

Like he said ^^^ Read my comments and other owners comments in this thread: http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/25486-Octane-Modifications

That being said, I like my Octane and will never sell it... Actually I have 2 Octane hulls and like them both. I think they are way better for just fun riding/freestyle-ish riding than an SXR or Sxi

Well finally rode the octane today...very fast ski but really lacks low end power, handles and rides like a dream, the -6 XFT carbon pole and quick turn steering plate is a little shorter than I like, overall I really think I'm gonna like it...I did blow out the B pipe coupler tho so I had to replace that tonight,on for round 2 of riding tomorrow!!

i'm an octard for life!

You should have plenty of lowend power theres enough brappp to get that tank up to speed, but as stated before the stock carbs leave much to be desired- IF you've ridden a refined and retuned 777 that was previously stock..
