I don't know if it's right, but i use a tiny drop of super glue to attach the ends together and then a drop of 1211 on both sides of the joint to seal it when I torque it down. I've never had a leak so far.

I have a Riva head that uses a rope o-ring just like that one. When I get back to the beginning I cut the o-ring slightly long so that when the end is inserted it sits flush with the other end. Once you torque the head down it will squish the o-ring. I have never had a leak. I used to use my finger to insert the o-ring into the groove but now I use a popsicle stick and it is much easier. I also start and end in straight area near where your finger is pointing to have the joint as far away from a sharp curve as possible. I also install the o-ring dry. Here's what the Riva instructions say...

The Riva head actiually has two rope o-rings. One between the head and shell and one between the head and cylinder. The Riva head has a total of 10 O-rings. I just remembered, I was about to go riding on my KTM last year and the float bowl started leaking. It uses an O-ring seal. I looked through my O-rings and the only one I had that had the correct dimensions was my Riva head rope seal. I did it just like I do the Riva head. Put it together and there were no leaks. I went riding and ordered the new seal that night. The new seal Is still hanging above my workbench because I haven't needed to install it.

I always add some grease to the orings to make them sticky, this way they dont fall out when installing the head.

I used to put silicone grease on all of them but I had one of the o-rings around the spark plug pop out on me. I tried installing them dry two years ago and so far so good. I have to grease the o-rings around the cylinder becuse there is no groove to hold them in place. The mcmaster-carr rope o-rings fit tight in my head and I don't have a problem with them staying in place.
