Other ADA head installation question (sealant on o-rings and other gaskets)

I have been talking to Wamilton a lot as I build up my ski. He suggests putting a thin layer of 1211 threebond on the o-rings when installing my ADA head (all new o-rings). But the directions that came with it state the opposite. The directions say to use a small amount of grease but nothing else.

What do you all use when installing the head? And for curiosity’s sake, why would ADA say to not use anything but a little grease. And someone as knowledgeable as Wamilton say to use 1211 threebond… DO you suggest putting a think layer of 1211 on the intake and exhaust gaskets as well? Thanks

I wouldn't put it on the intake and exhaust gaskets. Those are fine by themselves, just make sure they are new and not damaged.
I've heard other builders recommend 1211 on ADA heads. I've never used it myself and have always been fine, but I can see where it would be useful. ADA's recommendations are not always spot on. The torque specs for the girdle nuts are too low, for example.

If you use 1211 you may rip the oring when you remove the head. I use permatex aviation sealant to help hold the oring in place. It's just like hylomar grease use to be and it wipes off with acetone. Try cleaning the 1211 off your mating surface. Retarded.

i just installed mine - the head had full instruction, torque setting etc.. I grease the crap out it. Extra grease cant hurt.. Ran like a dream.
 
Tip: a more important issue is to use 1211 or yamabond where the domes meet the headshell to prevent vibration movement wear per a 30 yr engine builder...he also does the girdle acorn nuts 40 ft/lbs !

I go with no more than 35 ft/lbs.

Chuckie at Team Scream uses 1211 just like Wammer. You will get a great seal this way, but it is a PITA to clean up and new orings everytime.

We use grease both to hold oring in place during install and to prevent binding.

Definately want more torque than ADA specs. We torque ADA heads as follows, final pass head bolts 20-22ft/lbs. and girdle nuts to 28-30ft/lbs.

Remember to check girdle bolts torque after first few heat cycles and once in awhile after that. Dont think dome to shell wear is an issue unless head is allowed to run while loose.

According to Chuckie it an issue (in the long run) and that's why he uses 1211 on the areas that the domes meet the shell...I could not believe this myself at first but when you think about it the sealant could not only help secure the two parts from vibration movement but also provide a protective film between the two parts...

i read about using 1211 on the head to dome matting surface and thought it was questionable. about a month later i blew a combustion chamber oring, and decided to change all the o rings. when i inspected the domes i could see where they moved around. it wasnt much but i could defiantly, without question, see where they moved. so i decided to try it and well, i havnt had to pull my head since. that was at least 6 months ago. hell matter a fact it was in june because i remember it being near my b day.

Use grease and some kind of sealent where the long o-ring meets up with the other end just incase it leaked. Girdle nuts to 34 ft lbs and 24 for the head. Seems to work but it only has a couple hours on it.
