advent ignition causing rough idle?

Anyone using an advent on a yamaha? I'm having a hard time getting a good idle and the ski acts loaded up at 1/4 throttle but does not hesitate when you hit the throttle. I thought it could be the ignition causing these conditions, also harder starting, but I know that is a advent trait. any ideas?

Yes, also had the same problem here with 2 ignitions. Get used to it, thats how they are. I've sinced moved on...

Is it loading up or breaking up?
Put a tach on the boat and see where the problem is.
I had a Advent box that would break up bad between 4-5k
This was on a sxr box

I've been knocking myself out trying to jet this problem out, I just bought a msd enhancer for one of my other boats and i'm going to try it, is the msd the same

I went through that problem last year. It runs rough until about 2500 rpm and them hits hard. It wouldn't start as fast with the Advent also. It wouldn't fire instantly, it had to crank for a split second.

It would be, yes. I had to re-ject every time I changed a curve, but even using the same curve, I found it impossible to tune out the rough idle (when it did actually idle!)

The first two Advent CDI's I used were WAY too advanced on cranking, causing a really hard start. This could be overcome by using a hardcore battery, but was just a band-aid. Eventually, the extra load put on the battery from starting, mixed with a charging circuit that never seemed to put out enough juice to charge the battery properly steered me away.

I do know of other though, who have recently aquired the latest Superjet Advent, and have found the hard starting issue is non-existant.

Don't forget to set your stator to 0 degrees static timing before installing the Advent. That can change the timing curve a little.

I'd suggest swapping in the MSD if you have it. Hook up is the same except the MSD will use the brown wire (I think it's brown, or whichever the charging coil wire is) and the Advent will not.

Put in the msd and it idles like stock, I'll have to put it in the water to tell the differance, also going to start over with jetting. IMO the advent causes alot of problems for the performance gain

My ski started acting up today and the plugs were WAY off where they normally are. I replaced them and ran great for about ten minutes and then BLAH---the Advent ignition was an immediate consideration, but I'm not sure...:frown:

What curve are you using? I thought Slymo had the same hard cranking problem with his Advent. Mine cranks OK but it just has to crank a little longer with the Advent.
curve 1 as per Paul, cranks like the starter and idle gear is going to fly through the case

Chic, was your Advent the culprit?

Yes it was. Replaced it with another NIB Advent I had and no more problems. I haven't even contacted Advent to see if the ignition that failed is/was under warranty or what they would be willing to do if it was out of warranty. :frown:

I have been meaning to call them and give them serial numbers and see what, if any, options I have. This is the second Advent that I have had fail, but they hit WAY better than an MSD from my experience with them. I have run them on a limited wet-up and a stroker motor with better results than MSD in both motor set-ups.

I bought Slymos advent, and have it wired in the SJ, but was researching threads and read from a second hand that he was having the startup problems mentioned... (post 11 in this thread)

Looks like I need to take it out and tune with a stocker and then dial it in with the advent. Sounds fun.

Are the newer ones less problematic?

Yes they are, from what I have heard and experienced.

As Chuckie said in the other thread, make sure you have a strong battery---that is important.

Also, FWIW, Chuckie tuned both the limited and stroker that I referred to in my previous post. He is the most experienced builder/tuner with these that I know of and his advice should be applied when it comes to these ignitions.

I LOVE my Team Scream 5mm stroker!!! :arms:

I guess I will need to keep an eye on the Yuasa, or put the Odyssey in the SJ and keep a watch on the charge.
