Is the oem pole (Chopped 3") strong enough to take the abuse in surf or would i be best off upgrading to a aftermarket pole?

That depends on your riding. Plenty of people run OEM poles. A lot more don't.
I've ran a couple of XMetal poles for a while in both flatwater freestyle and surf without issues.
Others love the RRP line of poles.
Can't go wrong with AC or UMI poles for something more old skool and cheaper.
Then there's ATP, Titan, and BUN.

Figure out what your budget is and then pick one you like that fits that budget.

Note: No aftermarket pole floats like the OEM one does. That can be a disadvantage when the boat is upside down and away from you. Instead of trying to right the boat, the a/m pole might act like a sea anchor.
