Aligning couplers; with or w/out rubber dampener?

Better to align the couplers without the dampener then add the dampener after? Or align with the dampener in place?
Also what is the correct spacing between the couplers?

New midshaft and driveshaft in the blaster and I really do not want to have to replace them again.

Definitely align without dampeners. If you were to use the dampeners, youd really never be able to tell if your alignment was off since couplers have a snug fit with the dampeners installed.

strange, my manual says .5mm for (a).
the manual shows specs but it doesn't show how.
i'm having the same problem with my superjet.
i can't get my coupler to align. height isfine but gap (b) is uneven, just slightly. that (a) gap wouldn't 1mm out of alignment cause major vibration?and wear?
