Allright Ski Brain trust, question for all.

First step would be to try and get your motor to spin over by hand. Pull plugs, take the black splash cover off (two 10mm bolts at rear of motor) optional. Try to turn over by hand back and forth........... if you get no movement pull four motor mount bolts and exhaust hose and slide motor forward to de-couple from coupler. Now try to turn the motor over by hand, this will rule out the possibility of the jetpump being frozen.

If your motor still will not budge by hand pull the front cover. I have had a motor that would not turn over and it turned out the flywheel was rusted to the stator because of water intrusion. You could check this before moving the motor forward if you wanted to. If both ends of the motor look clean and wont move, work you way into the motor via the head, etc.

You may have electrical issues as well but it takes no time at all to check for a locked up motor /pump. You will know right away if your motor is locked up just reach in and try to turn it.

YES!! get the motor to turn over by hand!! On your 01 sj being that the only ground wire from the motor to the eletrical box is a 16 gauge wire. (This wire is running in the stator loom to the E- box) I have seen this whole loom melt, as one, causing a electical nightmear. This can be caused by excesive current being past through the system and no where to go. like trying to start a locked up motor. never, ever hold the start button down when the motor wont start. And don't keep pushing the button trying to bump it loose. good luck!

Disagree. The starter would burn up, that's about it. It is directly grounded to the battery.
The ground from the stator area to the ebox serves the ignition electronics only, not the starter. And that circuit is protected by a fuse which prevents "melting".

I have seen it happen many times. On different skis. I won't run my skis with out a 8 gauge ground wire from the e box to the motor. This is the best safety measure.

I would check:
1-pump...be sure your wear ring didn't swell on your prop during the off season
2-your mid shaft didn't seize
3-bypass the starter switch so you know it not that

LOL, that sucks.
Not all on my skis. I used to work for the Sporta Marina. A Kawasaki, Sea Doo, Polaris Dealer. You have probably noticed that inside your Yamaha electrical box there is like 5 or 6 ground wires all grouned under the same bolt to the electrical box body. Only wire carrying all this ground to the motor is through that 16 gage wire in the stater loom. That 16 gage wire is not always big enough to carry the ground loop load that can occur in all situations, including light corrosion. If that wire does melt it is super hard to trace down sometimes since you can't see both ends of the wireing loom and can pop up as all kinds of odd electrical problems like cooking CDI's. It is so much easier to just install a 8 gage ground wire from the intake manifold to the electrical box.

UPDATE - ski is FUCCCED

OK i finally got the head off and all the fire extingisher stuff has gooed everything. pistons are seized, cant get a lot farther in to see ehat else may be f-d up. I hit everything with wd-40 to let sit for a while. now what guy. im half tempted to just say f- it an put in a bigger motor. What are my options guys HELP! how do you get the top end off if the pistons wont let go?

I saw that one online last night i may just grab it up but...

I was kinda looking for something maybe a little bigger, but I will keep it in mind. I have another week or 2 before the tax money comes in which is dedicated for ski redoing. anyone have anything else out there?

dont give up on that engine. we can save it. ask them how to unseize the pistons to release the cases. then we will know what we are dealing with. i would post it in the general section. you ll get more hits.
