Super Jet Aluminum Gas Tank

I know i saw a build on either here or PWC tody for a home made gas tank for a SJ. It was a jerry can made into a gas tank, now i cant find it. Has anyone done it on here, either aluminum, or jerry can style?

I'm pretty sure it was Cannibal that used a jerry can in his SXR build.

Back in the day I used to have a SXI Pro. They came stock with a 4 gal tank. I got so tired of running out of fuel on longer rides that I made an oversize out of aluminum. I kept it as low profile and wide as I could. It was pretty easy to make, I made a mock up out of cardboard and took it to a dune buggy shop who used my patterns to bend the aluminum and weld it together. I used a Super Jet fuel pick up because it was the simplest set up. It worked great and held about 7 gallons.

I've never seen the need for an oversize for a Super jet, as I get about an 1 hr an 45 min per tank surf riding. The SXR is another story, they drink the fuel down. I'm planning on a SXR 1100 conversion this next year also so I will probably make an Aluminum oversize for the SXR in the near future.

Here's some pics of the SXI pro tank I made. It won't fit in an SXR without some serious modifications, I already tried!

Thought about making one for my ski but got a kart tank for $30 bucks so i went tha route, if I end up not getting enough ride time I will make one. I made one for my athers race boat...It is not hard, jus time consuming.....get yourself a few pizza boxes and some tape and make a test dummy, then fire up the welder

I believe there is a guy on here selling 4 gallon aluminum superjet tanks...I think it was something like $225, maybe cheaper?

You might want to pressure test the tank at 5 psi when your done, just to make sure there are no leaks in the tank. If the tank is larger then 30 inches in any direction, you may want to put a baffle in it to prevent the fuel from sloshing around. Good luck with the build.

ya i was going vacuum test it and was thinking about baffles but ill have to see what size i can come up with first

Nice, I had mine made by a guy in new jersey speedytanks.com. I added a secondary tank on the right side of the hull. I think it cost me around $275 or so. I used a wood mock up to figure out what size. Honestly, having roughly 7 gallons is great, but it gets a bit heavy when you first head out, oh well. It's kind of a pain filling it at times, but way better then a tow home.

Nice tank quick mick! I like the sight tube feature a lot, does that have potential of leaking or is that solid set up? Thanks, Dave

I built these tanks for the SXR that fit in the original foam tray and use the factory straps and pickup.

I have never had one of my tanks come back, or even been told that a sight glass tube is leaking. Once its on and sealed it should never leak.

Nice, looks like a sweet tank. I hate opening mine up to check level with waves rolling in to shore. I usually run it till motor cuts out then I flip to the main fuel tank, nice option for sure.

Its a tough sell. I made a custom tank (other than my origional design) for a guy back in June. Its still sitting in my living room and not paid for. Im sure he will want it come this spring.
I only make them as paid for.
