Other Always wear a lifejacket!

Because mine saved my life yesterday, along with my helmet and kill switch. Without any of those I would be in very bad shape right now. I was heading in and carving around on the flat water when the pump came unhooked. As far as what happened after that its all sort of a blur, but I think the ski unhooked - went sideways - dug the outside edge which threw me sideways and foreward slamming my head on the hood. At that point I was just trying to hang on in a daze and my weight fell backward. I accidentaly grabbed full throttle which sent the ski off like a rocket and ripped my arms off the bars. Problem was my right foot was still stuck in the hold, so when the ski took off at an angle it pulled my femur out of the hip socket.

I was doing full speed and everything happened in a matter of seconds. I was left in a daze floating in the middle of the lake about 20 yards from my ski. My right toes were pointing backwards and I could not swim because of the pain. I worked my way back to the ski, but I had to leave that leg dragging in the water behind me for a half mile which was absolutely excruciating. I've never involuntarily screamed at the top of my lungs because of pain before, but I sure was then. I made it back to shore, drug myself up to my phone, and called 911.

I was taken to a level 2 trauma hospital. My femur was out of socket for over 2 hours before they managed to get it back in place.

So, let this be a lesson for anyone else. USCG approved life jackets SAVE LIVES. Anything else and I would have drowned, and I am a very strong swimmer. I couldnt possibly explain how grateful I am for everyone involved in my rescue, fire dept, emt, doctors and nurses were all fantastic.

Ill post up some pics of my CT and MRI when I get them.

Good news is shortly before the accident I made it 3/4ths around on one of my first barrel roll attempts! So cool to watch the world spin around like that.

Did the MD's caution you about any risk of AVN to your femoral head? If they didn't bring it up then it's prolly a non issue for your case, but with hip dislocations it's a possibility. Ask Bo Jackson.

Yea they did. I have to make an appointment with the orthopedist on Monday and ill hopefully know more. The doctor said it was a pretty bad and AVN was a definite possibility, but also that I'm so young I may be able to heal more efficiently than most. I was pretty drugged up for that conversation as well, so my memory isnt perfect lol.

Got some great news today. The first orthopedist I saw who was referred to me by the hospital was going to put me in a wheelchair for 6 weeks AND put my leg in a brace. I said screw that and went to one a friend recommended who does sports medicine today. He looked at my pre and post reduction CT's and said the hospital doctor reduced the dislocation perfectly. I had one bone chip (that was broken off by a ligament) floating around pre-reduction, but it landed right back where it is supposed to be post reduction. He also said the chance of AVN occurring and causing problems in the future was about 5-10%, and there was no visible cartilage damage. I get an MRI in 6 weeks to check for that stuff just in case. I'm now out of the chair and walking around (slowly). With every step I regain some of my range of motion and strength, so I'm feeling pretty good about it. Starting physical therapy next week, and will hopefully be fully recovered in a few months.

The doctor also mentioned that sports related hip dislocations are very rare, and one of the most painful injuries.

I call this psychological therapy:

I think I got a bit dizzy when I read this.....
Take your time and let your body heal well...
Best wishes...

 Ouch! That sucks dude, yea, always ride with someone, but sometimes you can't resist to go out and no one can go with you. I feel naked without a life jacket anyhow
