Im trying to find a good site to buy paint from online. For some reason this task seems to be more difficult than I had imagined. Every site I go to lists paints but no way to buy them, and you have to visit a distributor between the hours of 9-5 (while im working) if you want to but it. Im getting frustrated. Im looking for a quality single stage paint that will be close to the "electrical blue" listed on this page http://www.ppg.com/coatings/matthewspaint/forfabricators/colorresources/Documents/color-selector-chart-01.pdf

From some of the threads I have read it seems that a lot of you prefer defleet or standox, so I have been looking for those ones, but I'm open to any brand that any of you experienced painters can recommend. Also, if there is a specific primer you all find that works best please let me know. I planned on just buying the primer from the same manufacturer that I get the single stage from but if you guys think I should do otherwise I'm open to that.

Lastly, how much paint should I order to do my ski. I'm already almost over budget so I don't want to order extra supplies if I can avoid it from here on out.

I used to know every paint store in foco... Personally I'd get something local.. Always better to buy from the guy who mixed the color.. Mainly for rematch if needed.... House of kolor isn't a bad option though.. Eastwood, meh there's better options.. Standox, ppg, dupont and the other leaders will not be an online option, simple truth..
Primer depends on substrate.. If your hull has a bunch of nicks and dings high build surfacer would be an alright choice... But it isn't a moisture barier primer and will require proper sanding of the substrate and sanding of the primer after cure... What i recommend(how i did both my hulls).. epoxy primer over prepped factory coating(gel or paint) then before it hit full cure blow base over it.. My sx got surfacer over the expoxy before base... I base/cleared both mine... So primer really depends on hull condition.. If it's smooth enough for your liking either epoxy it, or just paint over it and save the time and money..
How much paint depends on a few things... How much hull you're painting and what color the substrate is are going to be main factors... To do a blue i would prime it if the hull is anything but blue, white, or silver... If it's primer grey and you want to do top and bottom a quart should be plenty.. That's a quart of paint not sprayable...

Thanks aytee, that was a huge help! I guess I'll take a drive to a local place and pick up some paint from them. The only one close to me that is open on a weekend day carries matrix paint. They told me is was as good as ppg but I'm sure he is just trying to make a sale. I'm going to do blue on the top deck and I decided to do black on the bottom deck so it doesn't look identical to one of the other blue fx-1s on this site. I had thought about just using appliance epoxy for the black part but I don't want it to look like hell.

Matrix is actually a good line of paint. It's one of the competitors of PPG and DuPont, just a newer line with less brand recognition.

The main reason i say to use a local supplier.. Most of them will mix it ready to spray for you.. Otherwise you'd end up buying your paint then your reducer and catalyst on top of that.. And you can't buy them online in the exact amount you need... What i would do is ask them if they can mix the color and add the reducer to it.. And get the correct amount of catalyst in a separate container so all you need to do is mix it in when you're ready to spray and you're done.. No pint/quart cans of catalyst sitting around that you'll never use... Most places are usually pretty good about it if they have an open can sittin around since they can charge it out per ounce...

I'm about to paint my hull. Its an old kawi 750sx, so I'm not going to pay someone else to do it.

I went to a local PPG dealer. I was given a quote for a single stage and also for a base/clear. I like that the single stage is less work and a little less money. But I am worried it won't be as good as a base/clear.

Any thoughts on that?

I was going to do metallic blue on top and black on the bottom. Use an epoxy primer first.

What type of primer does everyone use, i tried an epoxy primer before came out crappy, either i didnt have it mixed right, was either using wrong size tip in gun or didnt have my gun setup right, came out like hairy, i was impatient sanded best i could, and just painted finish came out ok not great

The matrix system i used was pretty durable, it was single stage

Single is more budget friendly though... I base clear all my stuff but i have it on hand..

It was starting to dry as it came out the gun... Too much catalyst.. Too hot.. Too much air... Too small of tip...
