Could you imagine in the "old days" of NASA trying to get that mission to happen? Yeah, we want to put a car in space, with a dummy in a space suit "driving it", with David Bowie cranking on the radio... Sure, good luck...

yeah found the press conference later last night. i think he said it ran out of the starting fuel (trimethylboron?) and only a few of the motors reignited.

Yes. It hit the water at 300mph a couple hundred feet away and damaged the drone ship. He did say if the cameras survived they'll post the video on a blooper reel.

They ended up putting the Tesla in a longer orbit than expected in the asteroid belt beyond Mars. Overall a huge success. Not landing the 3rd core is minor, but all 3 cores were old and not going to be reused anyway. Missing the proper orbit is a bit more of an issue, but for a test it's good to learn from.

Best video I've seen. You really get a sense for how fast the boosters are falling and can see the nozzles vectoring to stabilize plus the sonic booms!

Forget going to see a launch, getting to see the landing looks WAY more fun.
