Just wondering. I have been commuting 150 miles and spending over 3 hrs a day on the road for the past 4.5 years. That's 200k miles on the truck, $22K in fuel and 4.5 months behind the wheel. I don't think I can do it much longer. It was tolerable when I was only working 8-9 hr days but it's been pretty consistent at 12-14 in the last several months as we loose experienced resources and bring in totally inexperienced replacements. This place is going to bottom out soon and will have to pull itself up by it's bootstraps and I just don't have it in me to help them.

On the flipside, I have a very interesting opportunity in front of me now and I believe I have all but convinced myself that it is the right thing to do. It pays less to start than my current job but is less than 10 minutes from my house and has the potential to make more money in the long run and open a lot more doors in the future, including the possibility of relocating us further south and closer to friends and surf.

My view would change from this...

Sounds like a good idea, I would go crazy driving that much for work. I already drive about 45 minutes to work and even that is a pain! If you can make more in the future and save a ton of gas and time, it seems like a no brainer!

Good luck!

The second view looks pretty interesting. The time and money saved driving would be well worth it to me. I also think it is a good idea to changed jobs then you learn new things and don't get bored in your old job. Would just make sure there is some security in the new job.

An honest question, why would you live that far away from work for that long without either moving closer to work or finding a new job closer to home?

If you love the job, move closer to it. If you love where you live, find work closer to it. Either way, you get your life back which is worth much more to your happiness (and family if you have one) than some extra money in your pocket.

haven't had a meaningful raise or bonus in 5 years - even though the company seems to be doing fine, and I've churned out a bunch of work...so yes, I've been considering it.

For the first time in my life I live close enough to ride my bike to work. Make the change! Figure that 3 hours a day of your time is worth something too.

That's a long commute, so whats your time worth to you? Are you factoring the commute time into your hourly wage? I say pull the trigger on the new job or move. I just got injured at work after 16 years so I might be forced to change.

is that a C-17? Boeing plant in Charleston? interesting times right now with defense contracts.................

I have given thought to it, just bought a house and im getting married in the fall, i recently asked for a pay increase and they literally shrugged it off and walked away. The company is doing almost double in sales this year than last. My only issue is they work around my school schedule so im sort of tied here for the time being.

I am single no family do not own a house and work for a large paving company in central ny, I commute 96 miles one way to the office. I have a work truck and gas card and honestly there is so much more in my life I want to accomplish. I love my job and as most of you know in construction you go where the work is! I have been entertaining the idea of moving closer I have been putting it off because I do not want to ask my girlfriend to move in with me yet lol.

i cannot even imagine driving my personal vehicle that many miles a day!! Like others have said its all about what you want in life and the pros and cons to your job, family, location, and financial stability.

OCD use the time in the car to think about what you want and where you want to be. Blaring loud music at 4:30 am can help but use the time to evaluate and make a decision!! The only one who can change your life is you!

And Boyer, a wise man once told me "Discontent is the first necessity of progress." (actually found that in a fortune cookie lol.)

Seems like a no brainer dude. 3hrs driving a day, plus working 12-14hrs will burn you out real fast. Your just living to work at that point. Should be the other way around. 20mins vs 3hours a day behind the wheel, even with a pay hit seems like you are still way ahead in the end.

thats a good fortune cookie!

do it B...that much time in the car will make you miserable, no quality of life.....

I took a sliiiight pay cut from my office in Jax 4 years ago, but my fuel savings more than made up for the difference

used to be my first pt was at 930, I'd leave my house at 815

now I get up at 815, leave my house at 9:00 to see the first pt at 9:00

going home for lunch (or to take a dump) is the bomb!

I say do it....

4.5 months of your life is not worth it to me...

maybe for a few months I could but normally, you could not pay me double to move up north or to commute that far...

I am studying for a new career myself....

I moved down from Canada for this job in Fairfax, SC and was living in a little town called Barnwell when I met my wife who lived in Charleston and already owned the house. I moved in with her and started making he drive as a trial that kept on going.

Two very important factors as to why it has gone on so long. I currently make a much higher salary than average that has been very hard to match, they caught wind that I was looking last year, freaked out and gave me a 10% raise to keep me around. What I really wanted was limited work hours and possibly a few work from home days. The second factor is where they built the plant. Low taxes and very high crime rate. Not anywhere within 45 miles that I would live, much less expect my family to. Google crime rates in Allendale, SC.

Check out these links. This is similar to the equipment I will be servicing. I will be working on slightly larger units in the Charleston Boeing plant that build the tail sections of the new 787's.
