I've had this system for a while now and figured it's time I write up a quick review.
I bought this last summer from Wattage for a very good price. It was practically brand-new. Installation is pretty simple. You remove the stock stator and flywheel. You are supposed to cut the wiring harness of the old stator off at the coils and connect the ATP pickup there. I didn't have to do this, as the my system came pre-connected by Wattage.
Put the brain box into the ebox (excuse my rusty looking ebox - it's bone dry, though!), connect everything together, then time the engine.
Also note my power and ground wires for my bilge pumps.
If I remember correctly, static timing is set to 50 degrees advance BTDC and then adjusted electronically. Torque the flywheel, reinstall flywheel cover, then program the curve.
(I might add I bought a brand-new OEM bendix :love
Programming requires Hyperterminal, a serial port or USB/Serial converter, and the programming lead. The programming lead on the brain is a simple audio-connector that you leave in the fuse cap. Programming is quick and easy to do.
I cannot compare the performance of the ATP Flame Total Loss to the MSD Total Loss because I didn't run this engine with both ignitions back to back.
The only comparison I can make is against a stock 62T electrical system with MSD Enhancer. The ignition adds what you would expect from total loss - snappy throttle response, incredible bottom and mid acceleration, and the ability to run higher compression than you would with a stock or Enhancer ignition due to being able to pull timing back on top.
What I love most about the Flame ignition is the stock look. You can't tell that I am running anything but stock electrics. It stays nice and dry in the stock ebox provided it's sealed well.
I have used this on the saltwater of the puget sound, but that was all flatwater.
It has a real surf test coming up in two weeks at the Oregon Coast.
Overall, top notch product. Easy to install, great performance.
