ATP Flame Total Loss Review

I've had this system for a while now and figured it's time I write up a quick review.
I bought this last summer from Wattage for a very good price. It was practically brand-new. Installation is pretty simple. You remove the stock stator and flywheel. You are supposed to cut the wiring harness of the old stator off at the coils and connect the ATP pickup there. I didn't have to do this, as the my system came pre-connected by Wattage.

Put the brain box into the ebox (excuse my rusty looking ebox - it's bone dry, though!), connect everything together, then time the engine.
Also note my power and ground wires for my bilge pumps.

If I remember correctly, static timing is set to 50 degrees advance BTDC and then adjusted electronically. Torque the flywheel, reinstall flywheel cover, then program the curve.

(I might add I bought a brand-new OEM bendix )

Programming requires Hyperterminal, a serial port or USB/Serial converter, and the programming lead. The programming lead on the brain is a simple audio-connector that you leave in the fuse cap. Programming is quick and easy to do.
I cannot compare the performance of the ATP Flame Total Loss to the MSD Total Loss because I didn't run this engine with both ignitions back to back.
The only comparison I can make is against a stock 62T electrical system with MSD Enhancer. The ignition adds what you would expect from total loss - snappy throttle response, incredible bottom and mid acceleration, and the ability to run higher compression than you would with a stock or Enhancer ignition due to being able to pull timing back on top.
What I love most about the Flame ignition is the stock look. You can't tell that I am running anything but stock electrics. It stays nice and dry in the stock ebox provided it's sealed well.

I have used this on the saltwater of the puget sound, but that was all flatwater.
It has a real surf test coming up in two weeks at the Oregon Coast.
Overall, top notch product. Easy to install, great performance.

Very cool Matt. How long does the system run without recharging the battery? Do you have the timing programing software and is it easy to use. I like the stock reliability enclosing of the system. I believe the ATP flywheel is a about 70 grams lighter than a MSD and the system comes in about $1000.00 at the current exchange rate. If the reliability is sound then there may be something here. Keep us posted Matt.

It should work great, now lets try and keep water and sand away from the crank...lol.

Erik,

There is no additional software needed. You just use Windows Hyperterminal (or any other free terminal program).
It is very easy to use, but not graphical. It's more of a table of RPM vs. advance. Chris of ATP recently explained that new units ship with a graphical programming software.
I am not sure how much I get out of one battery because over the winter the most I've burned at one time has been one tank.
I'll find out at a beach ride in a couple of weeks.

When I am out by myself, I don't burn more than a 3/4 tank before I get bored or piss the duck hunters off.
I need surf.

Glad you like it Matt, I knew you would!

I'll be running one of these again on my next build. They are perfect for the surf, easily programmed and make great power with your stock electrics!

I just put this ignition through another three days of rough Oregon surf. It ran great all weekend and even survived a complete sinking of the ski.

Thumbs up for saltwater reliablity.

I don't suppose anyone here would still have the programming cable for the ATP ts2? Picked up a ski with this system installed and I'm about to install a new engine

I have one. It goes with a ts2 stored in the drawer for a few years that maybe someday I may use again but I’m running a zeel so It will probably stay in the drawer lol. I bet ATP still sells them send an email over to England and ask they are good to deal with.

I will be out of town until the end of the month but in August i can send you my cable and software for you to try out. I had bad luck getting it to connect but maybe you will have better luck. ATP sent it to me with curve setup like the wax curve on the zeal and it worked about the same when I ran it on the Freak in a 701 in the surf. Anyway if you can wait a couple weeks PM your address and I will send it to you.

Yeah I'm in no hurry, I'm currently waiting on a et967 to be shipped to me i had a 780bb that the rear sbt crank bearing let loose on then took out the cylinder, so I'm upgrading a tad lol and yeah that is a strait through crack in the sleeve in the picture

Kinda off the Flame topic but I run sbt cranks in my skis and have one in a bb 785 and run the poop out of it but probably will replace it for next year just to play safe they are cheap enough. As long as you don’t sink and get em wet they have served me well so far. Sorry for your bad luck ,maybe resleeve and she will run again.

I had to use an old laptop with Windows XP to get the software to connect to my flame. You also need to have all your electrical hooked up and your lanyard in.
