B1X build

Didn't get a whole lot done today. Mocked up the tank and waterbox and designed and printed the inserts. Going to get those mounted tonight once they are done printing. Goal is assembly tomorrow.

Finished it up finally. Designed and printed an Air Down kit.

Designed new pipe mounts and bushings. Printed them in PLA. Not sure how they will hold up to the heat. If these don't last I'll try a set in carbon fiber nylon. Worst case I can have them machined.

Also designed and printed a 90 degree bilge outlet.

I believe if you send one of the pipe mounts you made to rhaas he can make them for you out of the same stuff he does his lord mounts with.

Going to hopefully have this thing assembled by tomorrow night. Just need to finish designing and printing the tank, waterbox, and foot strap inserts.

whoa whoa whoa there mister! Did you dye the resin?

I really like the idea of the rear access panel and have been tossing around that idea for my current SJ build. Making it water tight enough and strong enough just seems like a pain for a SJ tray.

Been a busy summer. Bought a new house, so this has sat in the garage as I get everything situated with the move. I did take it out last weekend. Rode for about 5 seconds before it died and wouldn’t restart. Carb on it is 25 years old and I don’t feel like screwing with it, so I ordered a new 46 SBN. Going to slap that on tomorrow and see what happens. Issue could also be the home ported cylinder that I cut through the water jacket and then JB welded... probably time for a new top end as well.

Time to buy that XS1400 and XS 52MM carbs. :)

I jb welded a corroded hole (not all the way thru) on the side of a cylinder to give the head o ring some more material to seal on. The jb weld went soft as cool after 1 ride

I have JB holes in motors in the past with good luck. Not ideal, but when your in a pinch...

Carb was part of the issue, but not all of it. I ordered a JM ported cyl kit. Should be here today. The JB weld still looks good on the old cylinder. I didn’t leak test it before I removed it, so I don’t know for sure, but I didn’t see any water in the cylinder or cases. If the new top end doesn’t fix the issue, then I’ll set fire to the whole thing or bring it up to OK for you to f*ck with it. Or you guys come down to my new place for the weekend and ride (and fix my sht).

Got the cylinder in. Impressed with the work Blue does. One of the better looking stock cylinders I’ve seen. I would have thought it came straight from Yamaha, but even new they aren’t that nice.

Will update with the test ride later today.

Little update. Ran into all kinds of issues relating to the fuel. Troubleshooting when you have multiple problems is always fun. The primary issue was that the motor was not getting enough fuel. This was due to bad lines and debris in the tank that ultimately clogged both the fuel filter and the carb filter. Replaced all of the fuel lines, changed the primary pickup line length, and washed out the tank. Lesson that I should have learned a million times over with skis, don’t try to save a buck by using old questionable hardware.

Now that’s all figured out, I’ve got a little bit of carb tuning to get done. I started with the recommended 120/155 that came with the topend. It had a lean hesitation at 1/4-1/3 throttle and at 3/4-wide open there was no change in power or speed. Moved the Popoff down to 17 PSI and increased the pilot to a 122.5. Hesitation got a little better. Had to order more jets. Going to try a 127.5 pilot to see if I can eliminate the 1/4-1/3 throttle issue. Once that’s good I’ll move on to figuring out the 3/4 to full issue.

So far I am loving the changes to the hull. My goal was to get the ski to be a little looser and playful, but without it being so short that it becomes unstable at low and high speeds. The changes seem to have accomplished that. Real test will be getting it in the surf once it’s tuned.
