back injury

My knee and back feel like hell. Gotta find some exercise to help out....

http://www.backfitpro.com/ultbackbook.htm

The book I have suggested above covers all you need to know about rehabbing a back with details and not just exercise instruction. Gives you good exercises that can be done and doesn't get away from squatting or lunging like most crap rehab programs do. I have the third edition here and reference it from time to time.

Along with that, please stretch your hip flexors, hamstrings, groin, it band, glutes, and calf muscles 2-3 times a week minimum and stretch a bit before you goto bed(please make sure you warmup). You need to have good flexibilty and mobility in the hips and lower body if you want to remain pain free.

You need strong stability in certain muscles(your back for example) but also need mobility in other muscles to keep the back healthy. Again, hip flexors and quads can easily irritate back problems as well as the hamstring. Stretching of these three muscles should relieve a lot of the pain if done daily.

has anyone heard of a surgery where they fill the disc with something. The reason I ask is the doc's are talking bout surgery, a fusion to be exact. And I dont want it to screw me for riding. I have tried the inversion table, a process called vax-d, Mackenzie excersices, Joint injections (wrong kind of joint) Epiderals, every pill under the sun (Vicodin has even quit working), and physical therapy, nothing has worked, it has gotten worst if anything. A lil input please.

What event caused the injury?

Where is the injury located on the spine?

Mckenzie exercises either work or aggravate the injury. My recommendation are bird dogs, cat camels, curl ups, and bridging to strengthen the spine and glute muscles. In addition, swimming and performing lunges will help you strengthen your legs and glutes that will take the load off your spine.

Foam rolling also helps as well and I perform this on a daily basis to prevent injuries to my muscle tissue and prepare myself for the day.

Hope this helps,

Aaron

I work at one of the big 3 auto manufacturers, and lifting and being bent over for 7.5 hours a day has herniated the disc at l4/l5. I have been out of work all summer from this injury. Now I just need to get it fixed, but I really dont want to have them fused. Thanks for your info Aaron.

A good physical therapist will get you back on your feet in no time. I have 2 herniated discs and it took 3 different physical therapists to find one that knew what he was doing. Getting into shape is probably the most important thing you can do. A good PT will set you up with a good exercise/stretching program and it will get you on your way. As far as surgery goes make sure you do A LOT of research. Recent studies have shown 90%+ people who have had surgery for back problems still have substantial amounts of pain after surgery. I refuse to get surgery till something is dead on proven to work; especially since my grandfather was paralyzed from back surgery a few years ago.

Most back injuries result from weakness in the abs, lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. Strengthen all of these areas in addition to stretching the hip flexors and quads will give you tremendous relief and put your pelvis back in its natural alignment.

Remember, staying active is key to avoiding injury and working through injury. Just work in your tolerance level and make sure your flexibility and strength are up to par.

I have heard of that procedure, they are still working on perfecting it I believe,Basically they inject a material into the ruptured disc and it replaces the damaged portion of the disc. When they get it perfected I will be in line to have it done.

Ive had the cortizone shots 3 times, wasnt too bad. I just want to fix it, not hide the pain. But your right, its scary having someone screw with your back.

Find a good Chiropractor. I see patients with this same scenario everyday. I have got them back into sports and on the water. With no drugs or surgery. That Vax D is BS. Sorry but I feel you wasted your money. Let me guess the Dr emphasized that you did not want surgery and this was a surgery free treatment. Only costing you a thousand $ or so. Its nothing more than a computerized inversion table.
