Backie chan rework

Got this from Steve years ago because he was waking so long with my phantom. It was busted up pretty good. I reinforced it. And rode it with a 701 and pipe for 2 years. It got beat up again pretty good as you can see in the pics.

Fast forward. I am gonna reinforce it. Delete the footholds. Repaint it. Re turf it. Do a small stroker 701 based engine. 144 mag And try and keep it under 270 pounds all said and done. If the goal is achieved. It should be an incredibly fun ski.

Prep stage. Sanding. Finding damage. Scuffing. Getting a plan. And figuring the small details to things.

Gonna be a darker blue top. Black bottom. Black diamond turf. And black superjet dash style graphics. Rrp pole. Schicks pad. Ovp.

Need to figure out the hood hooks and latch situation. Ideas welcome.

It's a fiberglass Kevlar hybrid. It weighs about 58 pounds as it sits with motor mounts. I'm going to fill all holes. Reinforce the pole bracket. Bilge kote theninside black. And start fresh.

My Phantom bought used came with a X Scream hood hook and at one time and had a SJ latch that the previous owner said did nothing but pop open so he mounted a ratchet strap. I kind of stumbled into a pretty decent way of keeping the hood on. The SJ keeper was still mounted to the hood when I got the boat and did nothing but abrade the straps so I fabbed up a guide to fit the holes from the keeper for the straps that worked way better than I ever anticipated. The guide being so close to the ratchet has kept the hood in place for some nasty side flops, ( learning flips, we all start some where). Without it I'm pretty sure that hood would of "slid" under the straps, with it , just displaced a little to the side. I don't know the availability of the X scream piece, but can vouch for it working pretty decent. Just an idea.DSC07454.JPGDSC05368.JPGDSC05384.JPGDSC05410.JPG

Another idea for you, I wound up coating the entire engine compartment with a mix of 3:1 US Composites Resin and West Sys. 423 graphite powder. Mixed equal parts by VOLUME, with a slight bit of aerogel. Rolled it on with a foam roller, easy to touch up , excellent at shedding grease and oil.

Just read your build. Pretty sweet and alot of attention to detail. I'm not sure if I'm gonna invest the amount of time you did haha. But I'll definitely give it a good honest shot. I expect to have this build done in time to ride next season. I'm currently working on building a barndominium on a piece of property I purchased. So funds are pretty tight for the foreseeable future. I have alot of parts already for it. And access to decent fabrication tools, and skills. Should be a pretty fun time killer.

Got a bit of prep done. Discovered a bit of damage. I'm removing the footholds. I don't use em. Ill redo the front foothold. And possibly a rear strap. Not sure yet.

I'm getting within sight of the first set of cabosil filler. I have a couple suspect spots on the bottom that might need some glass. But all in all. Seems pretty solid for what it is and how it was rode. I will fill all the holes an reinforce the pole bracket. And start fresh. Looking like minimal effort should be needed tho. Time will tell

Middle of the tray seems just a slight bit flexible. No cracks or stress areas visible. For gp I'm gonna do 1 laye of 1708. I'm trying to keep this build as light as possible. And that means keeping the glass work down to a minimum. Goal is sub 270. But if a guy could get sub 250. I'd sell my xfr most likely. Anyways. Ideas on weight savings not well known are welcome.

If you're trying to keep it light then I'd definitely recommend multiple layers of thinner cloth like 8oz 2+2 twill or this 8 harness satin weave 7781 8.9oz that us composites sells. Its very strong and doesnt require a lot of resin to wet out. You'll use less resin then use a layer of biaxial mat. peel ply to remove any excess and eliminate 80% of your sanding.

Is that 58#’s hull and hood?
Is there pump shoe in it?
What’s your 144 mag?
Single or duals on the 701?
B pipe or lay down?
What handle pole?
Big battery or lith?
I’ll take a shot at projected weight
If I don’t sell my Phantom I was considering something similar to what you’re doing with the intention of a small surf/ flat water play boat. My build was an infused glass hull and was 270#’s. I figured changing to an OE 155, single 701, b pipe , SJ tank, deleting foot holds and just going with molded toe/foot trenches along the sides of tray for surf stance. Figure I might get down to 265-260?

@hornedogg79 has done a lot of different things to his to improve it structurally. Maybe he will chime in
I just repaired the nose 3x. Once was to repair the gel coat cracks and reduce flex in the pole bracket area. They stopped using gel after the first few. I hit the earth twice in Daytona and made a 8" soft spot around the bow eye. Those were my only structural repairs. I did move my footholds forward and eps foamed the tray and laid up new tray flat on the foam to get rid of the foot buckets. It felt lighter after the tray work. Didn't weigh it after. Was definitely more buoyant. I had to push down with my foot to side start. Before I didn't. I sold mine to a large dude and he's been flopping around on it all summer. I'll buy it back if he ever sells it.

58 was with me holding the hull. Stepping on a scale. Weighing. Then subtracting my weight. No hood. Plastic shoe. 4 rhaas mounts.

Plans are hopefully large single carb 750-900cc engine. Rrp pole most likely since I have it but might do a xmetal. On the fence. Noco 14lithium battery. Blaster b pipe. Kart tank. Prob pfp waterbox I have already. Solas 144 mag (heavy turd, might go oem) no intake greate (always rode fine without one) shortest plate I can get. No footholds besides the front hold.

The pole bracket of mine is solid. Has some spiders at the corners. But all skis do that. I'll prob do 2 staggered layers under the bracket for gp though.

It's been years since I rode one. But I remember it being a very fun hull. Albeit slightly unstable at wot. But that's half the fun.

An OEM 144 stator, AM wear ring with delrin liner, OE pump nozzle w plastic steering nozzle, CATS trim and a Skat prop would be my go to for a lightweight pump set up. I’ve seen some cut down RN poles come in pretty light, even with beefing. With some careful planning a sub 250 weight , seems realistic to me.

I don't use trim. I have it on my xfr because finding a 155 exit nozzle that uses a non trim steering nozzle is all but impossible it seems. And I have it on my Evo to help with Pearling on big ass waves. If I can't find a cheap light setup for this ski, its not gonna get it.

A sub 200 pound hull is crazy. I never saw that build before. I wonder what that thing rode like. It was probably so much fun.

I was checking out the s glass recommendation and that seems like the way I'm going to go. Should be placing a order next week sometime.

I do quite a bit of things with skis differently than others. In how I build them. And how I ride them. But I'm always open to new ideas and constructive criticism. I got thick skin when approached correctly. Thanks for the replies thus far
