Super Jet Beginner Ski Recommendations!

I'm new here and just recently stand up water craft's have caught my attention in a big way.
So I just wanted to get someones opinion about what ski would be the best as my first.

I've been leaning towards an early 90's superjet.

it depends on how much money you want to spend now, versus how much money you want to spend in the long run. More $ now = less $ total in the long run. But, here's the short answer...in order from "cheapest now" to "best in the long run", assuming the stock engine is still in it:

- squarenose Superjet (650 6m6 engine, from '90-'93)
- squarenose Superjet (701 61x/61x engine - from '94-'95)
- roundnose Superjet (701 62t/61x engine - from '96 - '07*)

* the roundnose is still made today, but '08 introduced hull changes that I've never tried so I can't comment...but I know getting quick steering is an issue with them that means swapping out parts...

Thanks for the rundown, I've been looking to spend right around 3000 if a good deal comes my way.
The issue is in canada superjets tend to be pretty hard to find, there seems to be way more kawasaki's.
What are they like?

Yea thats pretty much what I've been reading. Are they less maneuverable?
That would be much appreciated, would you say buying one from the states is my best option?

Yes buying from the states will be your best option. Given that superjets are fairly rare up here and pretty hard to find guys usually want big money for them. All the skis i have bought in the past (which is 6 in total) have all come from the states. You will get much more for your money that way.

Thanks for the info, clearly you know what your talking about!
About how much is shipping for one usually? I've seen someone say its 2000$!

Found a 1990 Sn for 1500, the guy says he doesn't know what the compression's like but it runs great everything's stock
Does this seem like a good deal, Is there anything I should really be careful of when buying used?

I obviously don't know how much the shipping $ would eat into your budget, but if we forget about shipping for a minute then $3k gets you darn close to the cost of a roundnose superjet, with or without some common mods like the b-pipe exhaust...just for reference I've seen some for $3500 recently.

As far as the kawasaki vs. yamaha thing: they are both good skis...they just had different design goals. If you want a ski that can carve rails around buoys with top end speed, then go kawasaki. If you want it looser, more bottom end, more for freestyle, go yamaha. That's a pretty blanket statement that I'm sure some would argue with, but that's how I see it. Hint: the answer is Yamaha.

As far as the buying from the US thing, I can second that as being "standard practice": my friend recently sold his ski to someone in Canada, and most of the interested people were from Canada. We're about 1.5 hours from Niagara Falls, so I'm sure that helped, but it still surprised him. The buyer reported back that he had no problems whatsoever at the border driving back home.

I'm just worried there's some kind of big import fee or something along those lines. How hard would you say modification/repairs are on them?

I have two yamaha dirt bikes so I'm a little bias, but I'll keep an open mind.

Just see if you can test ride it before you buy. Flip it on the side rolling it to the left and check the prop for any bad dings. 650 superjets are really fun!

its only the gst/pst that you have to pay. i just picked up a blaster this summer and it was well worth the extra little cost to go get it
