Bendix carnage from Daytona

So, I didn't go down there, but my ski did. MonsterSJ was going to ride it in the flatwater clinic, but just after he got out of the no wake zone there were some troubles. He got it pulled back in, and could only turn the engine over one direction by hand. Hmmmm....

Well, after I got it back, I pulled the front cover and started taking out pieces of bendix. Just a whole bunch of nastiness. Fortunately, I had a new one sitting in the garage ready to go in, so I had the ski running again in about 1 hour. I was amazed that nothing happened to the flywheel teeth or pickup plate!

I just pulled the motor out of my brothers ski today. His bendix was stuck engaged to the flywheel. Ski would just not start and we didnt know why....now we do.

What happened behind the FW cover? Do you have a leaking seal or gasket? It's a mess in there!:ugh2:

Funny you should ask Darin. On the way down i had the idea for justin and i to call up some of the peeps who's skis were in the semi and tell them (out of sheer boredom) that we needed their personal information because while outside atlanta the skis were stolen and we were filing a police report. It was soo funny (for us mind you) but they didn't appreciate it at all. I guess some people just can't take a joke.

Shouldn't it be pretty clean under that cover...seems to be lots of oily residue. :pokey:

Geek, ya just can't win. :( Ever since you went to that monster motor, it's been one thing after another.
Same for me, minus the monster motor. I just suck as a mechanic.
I've had that happen twice. The first time only the bendix broke. The second time it took out a stator, too.

The bendix was heavily oiled before I put it in there. I didn't give it much time to 'drip dry' before I installed it. Even with all the extra lube, it was time for it to go (I guess).

This motor has been pressure tested umpteen times and I can tell you with GREAT certainty that the crank seal does not leak. That bendix had been 'resurrected' on two different occasions.

I think the cover gasket may have leaked though.

As long as I'm backfliping overtop of you, you can call me whatever you want.
Just because your boat is 1/2" shorter than mine doesn't mean I'm not going to be able to backflip it before you!! :booty:

Holy shoit went to try superjet today. And it appears to have a problem as it wouldn't start. It hasen't been started since daytona. All I am getting is a click looks like starter is screwed/ It was working great when I was in Florida for 3 weeks there were no issues and not a hint of a problem. WTF......... and then all of a sudden its fried :aargh4:

Might just be the relay, for awhile mine would do click and not turn over. I jumped the terminals of the relay with a screw driver and it turned right over. Swapped it out with a $20 ebay special and was good since.
