Other Bendix disengaging - Ideas?

This is an OEM bendix and starter (used) that I just replaced maybe a month or two ago. Not a lot of time on them. Yesterday the bendix started doing this out on the water. It will spin a time or two then disengage and free spin. Any ideas? Replace the bendix again? It was mint when I installed it, still looks great. Just took this video to help show what I'm talking about. Thanks!

Looks like it has gotten wet, both the bendix nose and flywheel have rust on them.
The flywheel definitely had a little rust on it when it went back together from the last oring failure. I can see a little on the front of the bendix as well now that you mention it. SOB. Whats a guy to do? New oring on the cover, new oring on the starter(greased) and a little sealant around the stator wire grommet about a month ago. Probably less actually.

yeah bendix looks a little rusty.

I just changed one out in my fixed steer. All original 03 parts that only got salty after 07.

1211 on the starter oring and 1211 on the front cover gasket if reusing it. That's what I just did to mine yesterday at least.

mine was rusty on the starter side of the bendix when i pulled it yesterday. everything elese looked mint. I thin once water hits the springs and weights thats it. a tiny bit of rust is enough to make it function incorrectly.

mine did that it wasnt engageing all the way sprayed it down with wd , Had to tap on the end of the bendix, and it engaged again like its suppose 2.

In that case I have one for sale..... you can do like the rest of the knuckleheads and soak it in ATF till it works again....

Addict, you need a good used OEM one, or a brand new one to be safe. Once they get rusty its game over.

Good advice, use 1211 on starter oring and on front face of starter to cases. 1211 on both sides of stator grommet and flycover gasket.

ADDict is running oringed cover though. Your cases need to be prepped perfectly for the oring to seal. Looking at the video, they dont look to pretty on the gasket sealing area.

Yeah that's been my experience as well. Doesn't take much to f one up. I figured I'd be purchasing another bendix. Tempted to go back to a stock FW cover/gasket as well. I'm not 100% sure the CF cover is sealing up. Love the idea of it, but seems like the oring groove and oring are too small.

Good call Chris.. Might be the culprit!

Two things, check the teeth on the ring gear, most people don't know this but the flywheel stops in one of two places every time, that puts extra wear on the teeth in those areas causing the bendix to kick out prematurely, a weak Bendix spring can also cause this phenomenon.

Ahh yeah could be the cause there.. Pulled the flywheel and bendix. Very small amount of surface rust on the nose of the bendix, no where else. The ring gear looks pretty rough. Might be the problem. I'm going to swap it for another flywheel I have right now that isn't lightened but looks to be in MUCH better shape ring gear wise.

good call. This happens to every rotating motor. We have two 16 CYL. diesel generators at work out of ancient subs and they always stop in two spots. Its a pain trying to roll them over back to a quick start position.

Tried the flywheel, no luck. Probably the bendix. I'll get another as soon as I can. Thanks for all the advice guys.

Just for sheets and geegles. You have a strong battery with good voltage? good hot and ground cables?

Might be a possible, though I expect it to be the bendix.

Sure do, all new parts. JSS cables, deka battery on a fresh charge night before I rode. Worked fine the first 30 min of the day.

I'm interested to see if after replacing bendix the new bendix just spins in place without kicking out.The new bendix has a stiff spring and the old one has weak spring and the starter is the culprit.Good luck.

Are you referring to the spring in the flywheel cover? Or the circular spring that holds the weights in the bendix? I think the starter is ok, but what do I know. I have a few spare starters that I've retired due to corrosion. I supposed I could try one of those out but I doubt it's the problem.. I don't have a spare bendix or flywheel cover spring to try though, so might be worth a shot.
