Bendix exploded

What would cause the bendix to blow apart? My last 2 ride i have had some pretty bad luck today was no different. I put my ski in the water went to start it and heard my bendix pop and just started spinning. Nothing was wrong with the bendix the teeth were perfect i just put it in there.

Read the section on bendix failures, great info for you.

I think water leaking through your flywheel cover (due to a bad oring or improperly sealed grommet) can cause the bendix/starter to get stuck and fail. If it’s a repetitive problem that would be one of the first things I would check.

The weight holder (part number 18 in the diagram) is typically the failure point in a bendix. As you can see, a bendix may appear perfect from the outside, but it’s what inside that counts!

If your bendix was a used one it may have been fatigued and it was just its time. Also, there are some aftermarket versions floating around that don’t have a good reputation for durability.

If there’s no evidence of water ingress or other issue I would just replace with another one. Ensure you install correctly and hope your bad luck has moved on.

Well im sure it is due to water getting in i just repaired the case due to a loose stator bolt catching the flywheel. I just pulled the tank and flywheel cover to check the damage found pieces of the weights at the bottom and blew out my epoxy i used to repair the case last time

The repair is no big deal i just didnt want to fix it again and end up having the same problem. I have a fresh oem bendix to replace it just wanted to prevent it from happening again

Before installing you need to verify the ears holding the weights are all there. If they are missing you need to replace that part or try another bendix.
