So I went riding yesterday and everything was hunky dorry when I got swamped by a wave, hit the starter button and nothing. Got to the beach and could hear the starter spinning, but it would not engage. Waited like 10 min and all of a sudden it would engage again.

Does this sound like the Bendix is just going bad?

U can do it all in the ski..just pull the tank. Pull the 8 10 mm bolts holdin flywheel cover on pop it off.. ul need a 17mm and impact loosen the bolt. Next ul need a flywheel puller and pull the flywheel off.. bendix will fall rite out. Clean it inspect it and make sure check the fitting in th cases also while u got it apart..
Several things u can do to keep the motor from spinning when torqueing the flywheel back on. One drop a rope down the cylinder, cold fusion sells a flywheel lock I belive

Gear puller from harbor freight. Just don't screw the bolts into the flywheel too far or you will damage the stator. Re tighten the flywheel to 62 foot pounds

easy peasy

About 1/4", just enough to hold flywheel while pulling it. Cold Fusion flywheel holder is awesome for holding flywheel while removing/installing.
