Custom/Hybrid Bendix takes out stator right before Daytona

20140112_094704.jpg Bendix came apart and took out charge coil ( 0 ohms) and probably lightning coil battery was down to 11.5 volts. Got home from riding it ran 5 seconds and shut off. I had no spark and found Bendix to be stuck engaged. Fortunately sj762 has the parts I need and this didn't happen on the next ride Daytona.

Yeah thanks, all three stator coils were ruined by bendix weights inside the flywheel...A big thanks to sj762 for hooking me up again with parts....Had a blast wrenching in the garage today while perfect sunny day going on in the low 70's .

Normally the retaining spring wears through and breaks, it is a wear item and should be replaced every season. How much time was on that bendix?

There are 3 tabs between the weights, it is more common for 1 or more to break off allowing weights to slide around unrestrained and break the spring causing this problem. Always check these tabs whenever your have bendix out. It is less common for the spring to just break in my experience.

This pic shows a bendix that looks like a new clean bendix and it still 'works.'
But cycle it open and there is already a broken tab and the weights have shifted out of position just waiting to cause carnage.

Thanks for the education on the bendix Chris!
Can that plate be replaced if that happens?
Chris is right, it's a PITA. I've replaced a handful of them in a pinch, making one out of two. I always order another from the maniac at that point though just to be safe. I've seen several with the missing ear syndrome.

SO that is what that piece was. I pulled my stator cover the other day to change my Bendix because it was not engaging all the time and when i pulled the fly wheel a large piece looking like that was stuck to the magnets. Glad it did not destroy my stator when it went. Will be replacing bendixs more often now.
