I'm wondering what the benefits are for a set-back Mag pump. Obviously the price is much more due to the new shaft you need, But strictly comparing a Mag to a Set-Back Mag, Whats the difference?

it helps keep you hooked up longer as you leave the water. wish i had one... i do love my mag thou, after riding a couple other skis with stock pumps there is no comparison. i can ride in the white wash all day and stay hooked up. i just put a spacer behind my prop to loosen the pump up a bit, but i think im gonna take it back out because that grab feels so good.

I am torn on this subject at the moment and piecing a second pump together just to do some testing. I run a setback mag in my Matrix and while I love the thrust and hookup it offers, i'm missing hull slide. Any power whatsover causes the ski to immediately hook up and straighten out which, in some cases is very desireable, but others not as forgiving and as much fun. It will really come down to how you wanna ride.

You cannot beat the power transfer and hookup of the mag pump but I am really looking to try out a non setback mag to see if it is a healthy enough compromise. I agree with Tzane, it's so hard to give it up once you have it so I don't know where I'll end up.

Unless you ride alot of whitewater and chopped up surf, which is very hard to find around Edmonton, I would say save the cost of the driveshaft and stick with the standard mag.

I was told the set back allows more water volume area in front of the prop, more area to pre load the pump will provide even more thrust in less than optimum conditions.

Like you said, unless you ride alot of whitewater and chopped up surf I wouldn't even run a Mag pump. I never noticed any difference in flat water. The only exception is if you have a Major High HP motor, where the extra pump viens will counter the ski from tipping when you grab a handful of throttle.

What are you calling a High HP motor? I think Matt E would disagree with you on the flatwater knock
