I know there are alot of opinions on this, but what is the best paint to use for a ski? I have a professional painting the ski, but from the auto side.

I have heard Imron, single stage, and base clear. He seems to think base clear will hold up best, because extra layers of clear can be layered to take some abuse..................

Any thoughts?

lots of different options

BCCC (basecoat clearcoat) is great if you are doing multiple colors and graphics, it protects the color better and lasts longer too. It's not needed if you are just trying to paint it one color and have it last. W/ that said I do recomend BCCC over SS for all aplications if you want to pay the little extra.

SS (single stage) If you want a good clean inexpensive job use SS. It's one less step, easier for the paint guy, less time consuming and will last a good 5-10 years w/ proper care.

decent BCCC lines:
Dupont - Chroma Base / Chroma Clear
PPG - Omni Base / Omni Clear
PPG - Deltron 2000 Base / Deltron Urethane CLear

decent SS lines:
Dupont - Imron Acrylic Urethane
PPG - Omni Urethane

Imron is very durable but it's not common in Body's shops these days. Use what the paint the shop carries. Most painters get picky what they put in there gun.

Most places will also not sell Imron to an individual ,I won't touch the stuff personally and you need an air supplied respirator to shoot it,no cartridge style respirator is safe for shooting Imron with.

i used PPG and BASF http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/45314

i have used Manny different products such as-

Akzo Nobel;
sikkens
lessonal

BASF;
glasurit
diamont
limco

PPG is also a good paint, don't buy the global line just use omni it is cheep and last a long time.

valspar is OK but if your going to buff it do it with in a week cuz if you don't it will be like buffing concrete.

I use to be certified in Glasurit... the best paint I have used..

before that we used diamont... it was ok, but sucked compared to Glasurit
I have never sprayed Sikkens, but have always heard great stuff about it...

all paint worth a damn have a bad chemical called isocyanate's in them thats what makes them perform so well nothing will filter this out WFO is correct use a supplied air setup or at least use a paint booth that flows enough air to "suck" the oversray out while you spray any good booth will do this. FYI your body exorbs isocyanate's in these ways;
10 percent through your skin
20 percent through your eyes
and 70 percent through your respiratory system.
sounds like fun huh?
it only causes tumors not cancer if their is a difference their both gonna kill you SLOOOOWWLLYY.......
to hell with it use a bandanna:Flush:

FWIW cost is not an issue, as its being done at work for a project. The painter will spray what I ask him to, but thinks BCCC is the best.............

Seems like most agree.........

We primarily use BASF/Diamont stuff............
